Is Big Star Getting Bigger

Wicker Park - April 2, 2013

Eater Chicago says: Not So Fast. According to an update published by Eater Chicago yesterday, the patio may not be expanding at Big Star Chicago after all. Per a dialogue directly with Big Star representatives, they are adding a 2nd kitchen and will move the take out next door. They are also expanding the interior cafe. But the expansion of the patio itself cannot be confirmed by Big Star Representatives at this time.

The 2nd kitchen should help with wait times and lines. And as far as the patio goes? We have our fingers crossed.

Big Star Expansion With Second Kitchen, Larger Patio? [Eater Chicago]

Wicker Park - March 30, 2013

For anyone who's ever been to Big Star, you know the size of this taqueria and bar is ....tiny. Hence, the long lines and multiple hour waits. The innovative approach to the "enclosed" patio which opens up in the Summer has helped the squeeze little. But these plans should help a whole lot more.

According to Alderman Moreno, Big Star is looking to lease part of the vacant parking lot next door as well as also move part of their operations into the building formerly the space of Caravette Realty at 1537 N. Damen Avenue. According to Moreno, plans are to move the take out window to the new space at 1537 N. Damen. The patio would be expanded into the vacant parking lot between the 2 buildings.

According to DNAInfo's report: Big Star's neighbors became aware of the proposed expansion through a public notice from the city's Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection, which was mailed Wednesday.

The neighbors then have the opportunity to express concerns about the expansion. The city requires all neighbors within 250 feet of the expansion be notified. The neighbors then have 40 days to submit their concerns in writing. If there are concerns, it's possible the expansion won't be approved.

So the expansion hasn't been green lighted just yet. And Alderman Moreno has yet to see any plans. Stay tuned for more about this exciting development.

The best news of all: as of last Thursday, the patio is open.
