CANS To Close Saturday
Updated: February 8, 2013
It's official. After 10 years Cans will be closing their doors citing the increasing rents as the reason. The following was published on their Facebook page:
Sad to say but it is true. Cans will be closing. Saturday, Feb 16th will be the last night. Rents are all going up in the 'hood and we have lost our lease. So stop by and see us before doors close and let's remember all the good times over the past 10 years! (anyone know a good spot for a fun neighborhood bar?)
According to a notification we received via mail, the space is being rezoned to accommodate a retail tenant. We do not know which retail client will be moving into the space at 1640 N. Damen Avenue but Racked has issued information indicating a athletic wear or sports equipment store could be moving in to that space. Word on the street is it's NIKE. It's really difficult to watch small businesses being replaced by large chains. Let's hope this isn't the case with 1640 N. Damen Avenue.
Please see NY Investor article we published for additional information about who is buying our commercial space.

January 25, 2013 - So far, 2013 has not been a good year for the neighborhood bars in Wicker Park; especially for those located on Milwaukee Avenue. The following bars have closed or are in the process of closing:
-Bin Wine Cafe: 1559 N. Milwaukee Avenue
-Gunners: 1467 N. Milwaukee Avenue
-People Lounge: 1560 N. Milwaukee Avenue (Eater)
-Marie's Riptide closing pending probate litigation at 1745 W. Armitage.
And now 2 more closings are on the horizon bringing the total to 6 and it's not even February yet. Owned by Three Headed Productions, both Salud and Cans appear to be closing doors next month.
Salud Tequila Lounge at 1491 N. Milwaukee Avenue will be closing after 9 years. The team behind this long-standing neighborhood staple issued the following official announcement via their Facebook page:
Hello friends, I am sad to say that Feb 2 will be our last night. After 9 years, Salud will be closing its doors. Thank you to all our staff and supporters. Hope to see you in our last week and we will toast - Salud!
Three Headed Productions will continue to own the Salud building on Milwaukee Avenue so we'll need to wait to see what the next steps are on the space.
Cans at 1640 N. Damen Avenue is rumored to be closing in February. (Racked) According to the information published via Racked, retail is likely to move into the Cans space on Damen Avenue.
Evil Olive located at 1551 W. Division Street is also owned by Three Headed Productions. Wicker Park's Milwaukee Avenue seems to be going through a transformation. Investors are buying buildings and long-standing businesses are either closing for good ... or re-concepting and reopening in 2013. One thing is certain, we will keep you updated on any new developments as they occur.
