Wicker Park's Historic Mansions - Beer Baron Row

Hoyne & Schiller Wicker Park

Wicker Park - March 18, 2013

A Little History

If you've ever taken a walk through Wicker Park's historic district, you've undoubtedly noticed the mansions on Hoyne and Pierce Streets. In the late19th century, wealthy German and Scandinavian immigrants lived in the neighborhood. Many of these immigrants were wealthy merchants who built the mansions just southwest of the North/Damen/Milwaukee intersection. Damen Avenue, at that time was called Robey.

This section of Wicker Park was referred to as "Beer Baron Row" as many of Chicago's wealthiest brewers built mansions here. And the mansions remain.

A beautiful historic building at Hoyne and Schiller is in the process of being restored. The architecture is really beautiful.
