Brazen Attacks Prompt Community Safety Alert in Wicker Park, Bucktown

November 15, 2016— The Chicago Police Department has issued a safety alert for people in Wicker Park and Bucktown after a 23-year-old woman was attacked in a brazen robbery early Monday morning. It's the second crime to happen in the area since Friday, police said.

Just before 7 a.m. on Monday November 14, 2016 the woman was walking to work near the intersection of West Wabansia and North Claremont Avenue when an assailant came from behind, hitting her in the head and knocking her to the ground.

The thief grabbed her purse and got away with a cellphone. Sustaining minor injuries, the victim was taken to St. Mary's Hospital.

Burned-out streetlamps were replaced Monday night on the block where the attack occurred. One of the neighbors who came to the victim's aid was shaken up by the attack.

The witness, who preferred to remain anonymous, told ABC News: "To wake up to those screams, it's very disturbing," he said.

Police have released few details regarding the suspect; only that he has dreadlocks and was seen wearing a black sweatshirt and sweatpants. The attack is still under investigation and no suspects are in custody at this time.

Four days earlier, on the night of Thursday, Nov. 10, a man was robbed at gunpoint just blocks from Monday's mugging.
