Man Shot in Wicker Park Saturday Night

Michael Hamrick - Sunday, July 26, 2015

Saturday night/early Sunday morning we heard what sounded like gun shots in Wicker Park. The sound we heard was approximately 12:30am but were hoping the sounds were something related to Wicker Park Fest which is happening this weekend on Milwaukee Avenue.

Unfortunately, our initial suspicions were correct.

According to a report published by DNAInfo this morning, a man was shot in the block of 1400 N. Milwaukee Avenue (Milwaukee at Wood/Wolcott) at approximately 1am. According to the report, a man was approached by another male who walked up and fired shots. The victim was taken to Illinois Masonic Hospital where he is in stable condition.

Chicago Police say the man shot is a documented gang member and they believe the shooting was gang-related.

New Restaurant Heads for Azzurra Space in Wicker Park

Michael Hamrick - Tuesday, January 06, 2015

Wicker Wire: We reported yesterday, that one of our favorite Italian eateries had closed up shop in Wicker Park. Azzurra shuttered unceremoniously on New Years Eve simply by posting a note on their door (and later posting the notice on Facebook). And now, according to report published by Eater Chicago today, it seems the owners have sold their lease in record speed at 1467 N. Milwaukee Avenue to a new restaurant. Azzurra co-owner and restaurant veteran Ron Dinella declined to comment on who has assumed the lease. He also added: that although Azzurra was done right and was a beautiful restaurant, it just wasn't right for the neighborhood.

We will keep you posted about future plans for the space.

Published January 5, 2015

We are very sorry to report that Azzurra EnoTavola has closed up shop in Wicker Park at 1467 N. Milwaukee Avenue. Azzurra opened in the former location of Gunner's just over a year ago in late October 2013. Not only were we big fans of the Italian eatery, they recentlyreceived a 2015 Michelin Bib Gourmand designation; no easy feat.

Notice was not provided prior to the closing. The following note was simply posted on their front door indicating their final day of service was December 31, 2014.

New Big Star Take Out Window Targets Wednesday Opening

Michael Hamrick - Tuesday, September 16, 2014

Big Star's expanded patio in Wicker Park

Wicker Wire: The team behind Big Star and Violet Hour are working hard to open their newest eatery Dove's Luncheonette later this week. The counter service diner located adjacent to Big Star at 1545 N. Damen Avenue will be serving food morning, noon and night set to the sounds of 1960's-1970's soul and blues. You'll find Mexican-inspired soul food and a tequila and mezcal-focused bar program. There isn't an official opening date but according to owner and chef Paul Kahan, they should be open by September 22.

The expanded patio is ready to go and the newly relocated take-out window (formerly located on the south end of the taqueria) is now located on the north end. Big Star reps said today they're hoping to have the new take-out area open and ready for business tomorrow, Wednesday September 17, 2014.

Safety Alert - Wicker Park Area Residents

Michael Hamrick - Wednesday, August 06, 2014

Wicker Park Area Residents - One of our own was assaulted this week just North of Division and Damen Avenue. The incident happened on Monday night at approximately 8pm. A Wicker Park resident* was walking home from the Damen Avenue el stop and was approached by a young man/group of men (late teens/early 20's) on Damen Avenue who asked him if he knew what time it was. He was just walking past the church being remodeled at Damen & Potomac. The resident pulled out his cell phone and told the assailant 8pm. Shortly thereafter, the assailant began following him, demanded the cell phone and punched the resident in the face multiple times. His injuries included numerous cuts requiring stitches and multiple facial fractures. 911 was called by good samaritans and he was taken to the hospital. Police arrived quickly but the group of men had fled.

This is the 2nd incident we're aware of in which a resident was robbed of their cell phone in high traffic areas before dark. A woman walking her dog at approximately 8pm in the area of Wood and Potomac in Wicker Park was also recently robbed of her cell phone; also by a group of individuals.

Stay safe out there guys. And if you see anything suspicious please immediately call 911.

*We have not yet received permission to publish the resident's name/identity. Information provided via private Neighborhood Crime Group via Facebook.
