The Green Production Measures Taken:

Green Music Fest goes above and beyond the City requirements to provide collection of recycling and composting on festival grounds. The City of Chicago recycling requirements ask for a plan but do not require a demonstration of results.  The producers of Green Music Fest contract a "green" consultant to ensure that recyclable or compostable materials are properly handled, not contaminated with non-recyclables, and that the materials are actually recycled and don't end up in a landfill. "Eco-Ambassadors" will be available at each waste disposal station to guide people on proper disposal of compostables, recyclables and garbage.  New features to Green Music Fest 2013 include a cell phone recycling station and expanded environmental education.

Also, the City of Chicago's new green initiatives will be on prominent display, including:

  • Divvy, Chicago's bike sharing system, is introducing its program for easy, fun, and affordable transportation, with 400 stations and 4,000 bikes across the city, placed in close proximity to public transit stations.  Green Music Fest attendees can win free daily passes!

  • As Chicago's Blue Cart Recycling Program continues its citywide roll-out, Green Music Fest Eco Educators will be having fun and helping residents distinguish recyclables from trash, with a chance to win prizes such as handy reusable recycling bags, and free downloads from local musicians like Scott Lucas & the Married Men!

The Green Family Fun Fest:

Presented by the Wicker Park Parents' Association, the Green Family Fun Fest at Green Music Fest provides plenty of fun-filled and educational children's activities throughout the weekend including: recycled arts & crafts, DIY musical instruments, organic cooking demos/classes, clowning, face-painting, puppetry, drumming and dance demos, student performances, live children's music and local pest experts on hand to teach kids about good bugs and how to help keep gardens green.

The Green Family Fun Fest Stage includes:

Saturday June 22nd

Mr. Singer Trio - 1pm

Bill Brickey -2pm

Sunday June 23rd

Win FREE Tickets to the Flat Iron's 100th Birthday Celebration

Michael Hamrick - Thursday, June 20, 2013

Wicker Park’s historic Flat Iron Arts Building – home to over 30 artist studios, six small businesses, a Bank of America branch, and Collaboraction Theatre Company – turns 100 years old this year and you can win 2 FREE tickets for their celebration on Friday June 21st.

Collaboraction has put together a two-night-only performance event featuring 11 original short plays, each based on a specific decade of the Flat Iron’s existence. The project is titled The Decades Project: Celebrating 100 Years of the Flat Iron Arts Building and takes place June 21-22 in Collaboraction’s Room 300 Theater on the 3rd floor of the Flat Iron.

The Decades Project began with a Facebook post by Collaboraction artistic and executive director Anthony Moseley. On March 5, Moseley shared a historic photo of the Milwaukee/Damen/North intersection (published by us!)  that is now home to the building, and asked his Facebook friends what he should do to celebrate the centennial:

The post received more than 80 comments, many of them from playwrights with whom Moseley had previously worked. The result was a fully crowd-sourced idea for a showcase of new plays based on the decades of the building’s existence. In the following weeks, Moseley enlisted 11 playwrights in the project and assigned each a decade. Each will create an original script of 10 minutes or less, and all 11 will be performed, in order, on June 21 and 22.

On Friday, June 21 the party, including live music and visual art, will begin at 10pm, and Saturday June 22 at 8pm. To win 2 FREE tickets just go our Facebook and Twitter pages to enter (a $50 value). We'll be randomly picking 2 winners for Friday night.

Purchasers of Collaboraction’s SKETCHBOOK Festival Pass will gain free entry to The Decades Project.

Replacements To Reunite at Riot Fest

Thyra DeCicco - Thursday, June 13, 2013

In amazing music news, Paul Westerberg and the Replacements will be reunited after 22 years in Chicago - this Summer -  as one of the headliners of Riot Fest September 13th - 15th.

The Replacements broke up on stage in Chicago at Grant Park in 1991 and were one of the best alternative rock bands of their time...and arguably... in history. If you haven't gotten your tickets yet, you'd better hurry.

They load up vehicles, travel around the the country and take up residency along the way with friendly homeowners. They bake lots of pie and then give it away for free to remind people to be kind and generous.

As someone who used to work in the music industry, we can certainly attest to the fact that it's getting tougher and tougher to market musicians. Back in the day, MTV used to showcase new artists and music. Now they feature the Jersey Shore. But despite those challenges, Def Jam created a unique and effective way to create a buzz.

Launching in 66 locations worldwide, Def Jam Records showed a preview of Kanye West's new music video "New Slaves" all in outdoor locations on the sides of buildings. In Chicago, the viewing locations included the Walgreens at North/Damen/Milwaukee Avenue Friday night; shutting down traffic. The locations were announced via the website

Sure not everyone was happy but kudos to Def Jam for developing a creative way to break through advertising clutter...7 locations in Chicago were part of the plan including: Wrigley Field, Northwestern University and North Michigan Avenue.
