It's hard to believe Summer has unofficially ended because there is so much happening in the neighborhood this month and the weather is just fantastic. This week we're featuring new art gallery exhibitions, great music, fests, fairs, new restaurants and more. There is so much to do in the park this month but our annual Summer events are winding down. So be sure to take advantage of them while you can.

Jackson Junge Gallery asks artists to render their vision of an apocalypse and, more importantly, portray their ideas of what a new world might resemble following this apocalypse.The artwork chosen for the upcoming exhibit showcases this duality. “APOCALYPSE 2012 : GENESIS 2013”, at Jackson Junge Gallery, 1389 N. Sunday, September 16 line up outside Burr Elementary School and race friends to the finish line...or at least finish the little over 3 mile course. Open Streets is heading to Wicker Park next weekend. Initially launched in the Loop last year (and this weekend), Open Streets has expanded their reach to include the Wicker Park & Bucktown neighborhoods. It should be a lot of fun but also please be aware that 15 blocks of Milwaukee Avenue will be closed next Saturday from Division Street to Western Avenue. So if you live in the neighborhood, plan accordingly. Open Streets.

 

 

This is such a fun event and even more special now that Renegade Craft no longer has a store on Division Street in Wicker Park. This  DIY extravaganza features more than 300 indie-craft artists from across the U.S. selling handmade wares, from jewelry and clothing to rock posters to bath products to plush toys and more. Summer's Last Hurrah

It's hard to believe another Summer packed with Movies in the Park, Garden Walks, Summer Festivals and swimming pools has come and gone. The untimely death of director/producer Tony Scott has left an irreparable scar on Hollywood cinema and this weekend you can catch Scott's last film in spectacular 35mm at Cinema Borealis at 1550 N. Carriage House Targets Mid-September

Wicker Park's newest Southern Belle The Carriage House is still on track to open mid-September at 1700 W. Division Street in the space formerly the home of Edge at Division Street and Paulina. This will mark the 2nd Wicker Park restaurant for the team behind The Bedford. The Carriage House.

 

 Covo Gyro Market Is Open

Covo Gyro Market is now open at 1482 N. Milwaukee Avenue in Wicker Park. What can you expect? Authentic traditional Greek gyros and salads from the team behind Prasino. We arrived for the opening but there was a slight delay and haven't had the time to head back. If you've been there, we'd love to know what you think. Covo Gyro Market.

 

 

 

Nameless Japanese Eatery Opens in Bucktown

A new Japanese Fusion Restaurant in Bucktown has opened at 1613 N. Damen Avenue and they contacted us to let us know they're hosting a contest to Name That Restaurant. If your name is selected you'll receive $100/month in free food for a year. Japanese Fusion.

The Lazy Parrot is Open

A number of restauranteurs have decided to open 2nd businesses in Wicker Park this Summer and The Lazy Parrot is another one of those spots. From the team behind Bucktown's Cafe LaGuardia, you'll find a mix of Carribean and Cuban food at The Lazy Parrot; located at 2257 W. North Avenue. Secondly, we're catching up this week on a little neighborhood news and more. Lots of restaurants have opened including The Trenchermen, Grass Fed, and Purple Cow Ice Cream and a few new boutiques as well. But that's not all. Lots of great events are taking place this weekend including the Annual Bucktown Garden Walk and party at Club Lucky. Jerry's is celebrating 5 years all weekend long. The amazing J. Davis Trio is also playing at Double Door and Wicker Park Fest is just around the corner. So be sure to mark your calendars.

It's time again this weekend for the Annual Bucktown Garden Walk from 11am - 5pm rain or shine. Each year over 700 attendees explore the 100+ gardens of Bucktown. Don't miss this neighborhood fundraiser & party at Club Lucky (the location of the welcome tables) at 1824 W. Wabansia. Farmers Markets

Just a friendly reminder that there are 2 Farmers Markets in the neighborhood; the one on Sunday in Wicker Park proper at 1425 N. Damen Avenue and one on Thursdays in the Polish Triangle at Milwaukee/Division/Ashland. Fifty/50 Team Opens The Homestead

Owners of Wicker Park's The Fifty/50 have done it again. In addition to The Fifty/50, Bleeding Heart Bakery and Roots, this team has recently opened the new seasonal rooftop spot in West Town called The Homestead. The Homestead officially opened their doors this week and will feature farm fresh fare and a menu of predominantly small plates. For additional information: The Homestead.

 

 

Grass Fed's Soft Opening

Grass Fed has opened their doors (via a soft opening) in the space formerly the home of Caffe de Luca at 1721 N. Damen Avenue in Bucktown. What can you find here? Steak, steak and more steak. Seriously. There's one option on the menu: sirloin. And it's served with a salad and fries for $25. Vegetarians fear not. There's an off-the-menu option for you too. Jerry's 5 Year Anniversary Party

Jerry's Wicker Park will hosting a 5 Year Anniversary celebration this weekend from July 12th-15th, with rare beer, whiskey specials, hickory-smoked meats, and special music to thank Chicago for supporting them the past five years. Oiistar's Ramen Plans For September

With seating for approximately 50, Oiistar is heading to Milwaukee Avenue with a focus on ramen dishes. The Savoy Opening Delayed

Wicker Park's newest seafood/raw/absinthe restaurant - The Savoy - has said there will be about a week delay for their opening. Their goal is to open next weekend and worst case scenario by the end of July. The Savoy has moved into the space formerly La Fonda del Gusto at 1408 N. Milwaukee Avenue. The Trenchermen is Open

The Trenchermen is officially open at 2039 W. North Avenue in Wicker Park. Reviews to date have been excellent. Expect a slight delay in brunch however. It's hard to believe Bucktown's Holstein Park (2200 N. Oakley) is turning 100 this year. A big 100 year birthday party is being planned and you can join the Chicago Park District in this once in a lifetime celebration. The details.

Bucktown Garden Walk

Farmers Markets are Open

Two Farmers Markets are open again in Wicker Park this year. The first is the traditional Wicker Park Farmers Market hosted at 1425 N. Damen Avenue in Wicker Park proper. The 2nd is hosted in the Polish Triangle located at Division/Milwaukee/Ashland Avenue. It should be opening today:  Farmers Markets.

 

Historic Walking Tours

The Chicago Architecture Foundation is hosting Historic Walking Tours throughout the neighborhood this Summer and early Fall. With its history as a community dating back to the 1870's, you can explore everything from Victorian mansions to the commercial districts. Walking Tours.

 

Learnapalooza

Learnapalooza has come and gone for the year. So look for Learnapalooza to arrive next June. Each year Learnapalooza provides an incredible opportunity for people to participate in workshops/classes for FREE. The classes are hosted by neighborhood business. Sign up early. Wicker Park Garden Tours

Kicking off this Sunday, now you can take a tour of the 10,000 square feet of award-winning ornamental gardens designed, funded and maintained by hard-working volunteers working in conjunction with the Chicago Park District. Tours will be available into early September.  Tours.

Hello and welcome to this week's edition of your Insider Weekend Guide.

We have an exciting weekend ahead with beautiful weather in the forecast. If you're a music lover, this week and weekend are for you. Green Music Fest arrives Saturday and free music shows are available at the Empty Bottle and Double Door all week - and weekend - long. But that's not all. We've also included Savannah style shrimp boils, lots of free community events, theater and more. 

The Lollapalooza Aftershows we mentioned last week are already selling out. So if you haven't gotten your tickets to those yet...do it.  

 

Last but not least, we learned this week our small business is eligible for a very generous grant. But we need 250 Votes to be qualify. 2012 Chicago Reader "Best Of" List

The Chicago Reader just published their best of list for 2012 which includes a number of Wicker Park & Bucktown businesses. But that's not all. 1st Ward Alderman Joe Moreno was voted as Best Alderman and Wicker Park was voted as the Best Neighborhood for Nightlife. This we already know. Chicago Reader's Best Of 2012.

 

Farmers Market - Tonight - Division/Ashland

Yes there are 2 Farmers Markets this year in Wicker Park. And every Thursday you can visit the Farmers Market located at Division & Ashland for produce, cheese, teas, soups and more. Opens at 3:00pm. Market.

Bucktown's Bluebird -1749 N. Damen Avenue - is bringing in a new chef - and new menu just in time for Summer. Talented Chef Dave Ford is heading to Bluebird and will be overseeing the kitchen. Team Behind Prasino Plans New Spot

Alderman Moreno announced in a State of the Ward meeting that the team behind Prasino will be opening a new Greek/Middle Eastern gyro spot on Milwaukee Avenue next to Native Foods Cafe at 1482 N. Joe's Wine Cellar Opens Tuesday

Joe's Wine Cellar has moved in to Wicker Park and is located in the space formerly the home of Division Cleaners at 2108 W. Division Street. But we can assure you, there are no signs of the cleaners left in this space. Joe's offers 350+ varieties of wine, 16 taps for tasting, 80+ craft brews in bombers and mix and match six-packs plus mainly local cheeses, charcuterie, and fresh-baked baguettes from La Boulangerie. Plenty Grocery Heads to Wicker Park

Plenty Grocery & Deli is moving in to Wicker Park in the space formerly the home of Zaraz Collections at 2036 W. Division. Although plans are still in the works you can expect a neighborhood grocery store feeling and produce, dairy, breads, meats and cheeses. Plenty.

 

Temple Beautiful & The Fountain of Youth
