Hello and welcome to this week's edition of your Insider Weekend Guide. 


This week we're sending an abbreviated Weekend Guide because the focus in the neighborhood is on eating, drinking and shopping on Division Street. Do Division kicks off tonight at 5pm rain or shine and lasts through Sunday. Lots of parking restrictions are underway. Here's a handy little guide to street closures and parking bans. But that's not all. Many of the Chicago Park District's events like hula hooping and yoga start next week.

Do Division Street Fest - Chicago, IL


Do Division is This Weekend Rain or Shine, Wicker Park's Do Division kicks off this evening. You'll find lots of food, drink, shopping, fashion shows, kids festivities ... and apparently 4,000 vibrators courtesy of Trojan. But that's not all. Yoga and Hoola Hooping start in the park next week. Summer officially arrives. 

Movies in the Park  - One of our absolute favorite events every Summer is the Movies in the Park event hosted throughout Chicago Parks all Summer long. This year, Spider Man, Little Shop of Horrors, Hotel Transylvania, Jurassic Park and more are heading to the neighborhood and it's free. So get that bug spray ready.

NIKE to Open in Bucktown - It has been rumored for months that NIKE would be moving in to the space formerly the home of CANS at 1640 N. Damen Avenue and those rumors were confirmed this week via Crain's Chicago Business. NIKE officially begins work July 15th.

 

Weekend Events - A few great shopping events to put on your radar for this weekend. Both the Wicker Park Antique & Junque Sale and the Chicago Flea Market will be taking place at Damen + Schiller. So put those 2 very special events on calendar. Looking to skip the rain? Head to Heaven Gallery at 1550 N. Milwaukee Avenue for a vintage extravanganza and sale all weekend long. The sale is 12pm-6pm Saturday and Sunday and showcases 12 different vendors.

 

Last but not least, the Wicker Park Farmers Market opens this Sunday.

Chicago Craft Beer Week - Chicago Craft Beer Week is still going strong with special events and beer scheduled throughout Wicker Park and Bucktown. The event continues through Sunday. For additional information and specific details about what's happening in the neighborhood: CCBW.


Empire Liquors Closes - Empire Liquors has closed up shop after 7 years in Wicker Park. According to owner Matt Eisler, the neighborhood has changed since its opening in 2006 and a new plan is in the works for the space at 1566 N. Milwaukee Avenue. Details about that will follow shotrly.

Do Division Street Fest - Chicago, IL


Do Division is Next Weekend Details about Do Division, all the neighborhood festivals, the farmers market, special events, pool openings and more are all right here. We'll be adding even more events as information becomes available. Your WPB Summer Guide.


Runners Meeting Up- Saturdays  If you'd like to join a neighborhood running group, the regular Tuesday evening group (which includes almost 40 people) has just expanded to include Saturdays. They have 4 and 8 mile groups. For additional information.

Die Kreuzen

Don't Miss Shows - One of music's least recognized, but worthy of recognition bands, Milwaukee's Die Kreuzen was formed in 1981. They blend metal, rock and punk into their music and just last year, the group reunited after a very long hiatus. They bring a rare show to Chicago this weekend at Double Door that will showcase the entire span of their career.

West Fest Initial Line Up - West Fest has announced their initial line-up and dates for this year. The festival is just a tiny bit south of the border of Wicker Park on Chicago Avenue and features, live music, food, drink, activities for kids & pups and more. Flash Taco Make Over  -  We mentioned last week, after 15+ years, we noticed the iconic sign at North/Damen/Milwaukee had been removed. And, as it turns out Flash Taco is getting a very fancy little makeover. New decor and a dj booth are part of the plans. You can find a picture of the new signage here. Flash Taco will be closed early next week for a few days to finalize their remodeling.

 

Shawarma Garden Heads to Wicker Park- Last December we reported on a new "Middle Eastern Cuisine Focused" eatery heading to the prior home of Habitat on Division St. And last week we noticed construction was well under way. This new Division Street restaurant will focus on family recipes, takeout, delivery and more. Look for Shawarma Garden to open this July.

Riot Fest Headliners - The 1st wave of bands for Riot Fest have been announced. Riot Fest is just around the corner in Humboldt Park and the first announcement of bands includes: Fall Out Boy, Blink 182, Dinosaur Jr., Blondie, Bob Mould + more. More Rentals Head to Wicker Park
We reported back in February about the sale of this majestic and iconic church in Wicker Park located at Damen + Evergreen. This property (including the house just West of it) sold for only $1.3 million which is less than the value of the land alone. According to a report published today, it's going to be a rental building with 11 two-bedroom rental units planned for the space pending a zoning variance. These rentals should be available Fall 2014.

Flash Taco Make Over  -  After 15+ years, we noticed the iconic sign at North/Damen/Milwaukee had been removed. And, as it turns out Flash Taco is getting a very fancy little makeover. New decor and a dj booth are part of the plans. 

 

Lillie's Q Re-Opening   - Issued via a press release this week, Lillie's Q announced they will be re-opening their doors on North Avenue very soon. Very positive news. Last March a large fire swept through Lillie's and it was not certain at that time whether they could re-open or not. Look for the doors to open again in June.

 
Spring Restos On Our Radar - The paper is off the windows and MAK is hiring for their new healthy eatery located in the former home of Renegade Craft on Division and Mott Street chefs were spotted in the kitchen this week. Can an opening be far behind? Both of these new Wicker Park restaurants are on our radar for Spring Openings.

Weekend Events - This weekend don't miss the Anne Sportun Trunk Show happening at Bucktown's Virtu 2034 N. Damen Avenue. Also this weekend, Wed Local features local neighborhood artisans, shops, vendors and venues for those planning their nuptials.

Mother's Day Magic - The House Theatre has announced a very special show for Mother's Day. The Magic Parlour starring Dennis Watkins will host a matinee next weekend. These shows sell out so be sure to get your tickets soon.

Churros,  HalfWit and Chocolate  -  Big Star is now kicking off Sunday mornings bright and early with churros con chocolate and Halfwit coffee served from their food truck on the Big Star patio. They won't be open for business this weekend but will be resuming their Sunday morning special on May 12th.

 

Le Colombe Heads to Bucktown  - Le Colombe is opening a 2nd location in Bucktown. According to a report published via Crain's Chicago Business, Le Colombe is opening close to the Damen Blue Line El stop but a specific location has not yet been disclosed.

 

Mother's Day All You Can Eat Brunch - Club Lucky is hosting an incredible all-you-can-eat Mother's Day Buffet next weekend. Their menu is amazing and kids under 5 eat for free. Be sure to make your reservations now while there are a few spots left. Mother's Day.

 

Prix Fixe Cinco de Mayo Style - Bucktown's Riverside Cafe is known for their delicious breakfast, lunch and all-you-can-eat Sunday brunch. Chicago 1968 - Vanquished Realities

This new exhibition at Wicker Park's Eyeporium Gallery features photos that are anything but that. Photographer Stan Rosenstock sifted through over 3,000 photos from the tumultuous 1960's in Chicago to select the ones that will be showcased here. Graffiti Removal Day - Alderman Moreno is hosting a volunteer graffiti removal day this Saturday starting at 10am. The team will meet at Clemente High School. If you're interested in helping please contact Alderman Moreno's office for additional information.

New Hotel Hybrid Heads to Division - A older Wicker Park building is beginning a new life at 1659 W. Division Street. The former SRO building is being transformed into a hotel-hostel hybrid. It will include 35 units and possibly a small cafe for coffee and pastry. Look for Holiday Jones to open this Summer.

Palm Terrace Banquets Facade Removed - One of our amazing Twitter followers gave us a heads up last weekend. The front facade of the Palm Terrace Banquets building was being removed. And behind it?  Beautiful turn-of-the-century architecture. For a peek at the new look. Palm Terrace.

Soul Summit Presents: Ruby Velle and The Soulphonics

Don't Miss Music Shows - This weekend packs a punch with great music you won't want to miss. Tonight. The best dance party in town, Soul Summit Dance Party, kicks off their monthly FREE show at 9:00pm. British band Killing Joke is playing multiple sold out shows at the Empty Bottle with an additional early show added and Southern Cal veteran Bleached heads to Subterranean.

Jackson Junge Announces "Sex Sells" Exhibition - When Jackson Junge solicited artists for sexual imagery there was no way to predict what sort of submissions they would receive. And with a diverse group of artists, the interpretation of Sex Sells are quite varied. The exhibition opens May 8th with a reception for the artists May 10th. Ashland Avenue Pegged for Revamp - Just announced this morning, Ashland Avenue has been selected for a major CTA overhaul beating out Western Avenue. Plans for the revamp will extend as far South as 95th and as far North as Irving Park. You can find additional details and preliminary plans here. 


Clean & Green - There are a number of ways to participate in Earth Day this year. First the Bucktown Community Organization will be relocating plants from the Bloomingdale Trail to another location. Want to participate?  Here's how you can become involved. Also this weekend, the Annual Clean & Green event facilitated by the Mayor's Office. You can help clean up the neighborhood, remove graffiti and more. For additional details about how to participate in Wicker Park and Bucktown contact your local Alderman's Office.


Green Music Fest Initial Line Up Announced - Still a few months away, Green Music Fest has announced a few preliminary bands for this year's line up June 22nd-23rd.Unfortunately, there is no Dinosaur Jr. or Raveonettes headlining again year.


Green Resources Community Fair This weekend you'll find a community fair happening in Wicker Park proper at 1425 N. Damen Avenue. The fair will focus on how you can become more "green" and offers a number of classes - like yoga - and activities. It's free and perfect for kids too. 


Wicker Park Garage Break-Ins - If you live in the area and own a bicycle you may not want to keep it in your garage. There have been 4 garage break-ins on one small block of Crystal Street in Wicker Park. If you have anything of value in your garage and/or car, you may want to bring those inside. Chicago International Move & Music Festival- This weekend do not miss the 5th Annual CIMM Fest which features over 150 music and movie performances throughout Logan Square and Wicker Park. It's one of the best events of the year and you can see an incredible number of interesting and unique performances and film, documentaries, etc you won't be able to see anywhere else. Dine Out for Life with Club Lucky - Every year Club Lucky participates in this terrific fundraiser to generate money which is donated to Dining Out For Life. So if you head to Club Lucky on April 25th, a portion of the proceeds is donated to this great cause.


Ripasso vs Schwa - Chef Battle & Fundraiser - For the 2nd time Chef Theo Gilbert (Ripasso) and fellow Chef Michael Carlson (Schwa) will battle to make the very best dishes using the same 3 ingredients... and one secret ingredient. It's all for a great cause and helps to raise money for Chicago Wapiti RFC, Youth Rugby Program. And they'll be opening up a brand new location this Summer in Bucktown. Western Avenue is adding an incredible amount of great new eateries and Sticky Rice is a don't miss; fried caterpillars and all. 

 

Time Out Chicago's Eat Out Awards - This week Time Out Chicago announced their 2013 Eat Out Awards. With the big changes happening right now at Time Out Chicago, this year's event was a little bittersweet. But a big congratulations are in order for all of the winners and the Wicker Park and Bucktown spots that won Reader & Critic Awards.

National Record Store Day  - The 3rd Saturday in April is always National Record Store Day; a day when you have the opportunity to celebrate the independent record stores in your community and across the country. Be sure to stop by Reckless Records and Dusty Groove for food, giveaways, in-store performances, special promotions and more. Record Store Day.


Riley Announces Store Closing  - Earlier this week, Bucktown's long-term retailer Riley announced they would be closing. The building was sold last year and Riley's lease was not renewed. A member of the business community for 10 years, this is a big loss for the neighborhood. In addition, the very talented Chicago designer Carl Dahlstedt has also closed up shop at 2028 W. Division Street. Apparently they have relocated to Michigan.


Last but not least, we reported earlier that Kids Rule is also closing up shop on Milwaukee Avenue. Their big sale continues.
