West Town Art Walk - Chicago, IL

The West Town Art Walk is back for its 3rd year. You can visit both local businesses and artists while walking throughout the neighborhood tonight and all day Saturday on Chicago Avenue from Milwaukee Avenue to Oakley. Also tonight, Wicker Park's ORNOT Gallery is hosting their 2nd show at 1562 N. Milwaukee Avenue inside of Ready Coffee. Local artists Steve Pollack and Cindie Kurman Barrie will be featured.


 

COMMUNITY EVENTS



Free yoga continues every Saturday morning at 9am and 11am at Ready Coffee and the Wicker Park Farmers Market is back on Sunday and is open from 8am - 2pm featuring fresh produce, cheese, meat, baked goods, flowers and more. 

 

In neighborhood news: the Bucktown Apple Pie contest is looking for more contestants.So, if you're a baker and have a great recipe for an amazing pie,sign up. It's always a lot of fun and last year it was packed. Construction has officially begun on The Bloomingdale Trail. A number of people were towed this week at Honore and Bloomingdale Avenue. So if you're in or heading to Bucktown, please be aware of the parking restrictions. And it sounds like work on the Milwaukee-Wood-Wolcott intersection has been delayed once again. We will keep you posted.

Marky Ramone's Blitzkrieg with Andrew W.K. on Vocals

Music: This weekend 6 hunky guys, who also happen to be part of a six piece orchestral folk-pop band based in Seattle head to The Empty Bottle. Don't miss Hey Marseilles Sunday night. And on Tuesday October 8th, Jam Productions Presents: Marky Ramone's Blitzkrieg with Andrew W.K on vocals. Should be a great show.


Theater:  Shadow Town opens at The Den Theater in Wicker Park next week and tells the story of 4 Chicago area sex trafficked girls through the eyes of their pimp.This original play is based on dozens of interviews with people involved in sex trafficking right here in Chicago.





FOOD & DRINK NEWS



Food -  Wicker Park's new Asian eatery RUNA has opened and is offering 30% off your next meal through October 15th as part of their Grand Opening. The team behind The Violet Hour and Big Star have just signed a lease for the Cipolina space directly next to Big Star.So another  Paul Kahan business is in the works on Damen Avenue in Wicker Park. And in closing news, Covo Gyro Market has shuttered on Milwaukee Avenue. 


Foodie Events: Wicker Park's Weekly Food Festival  The Nosh is back this Saturday but their hours are shorter to accommodate the shorter days ahead. Starting this week The Nosh's new hours are 10am - 3pm.


Drink -  Red Door Kitchen & Bar is hosting a Meet & Greet for local neighbors on Monday. Limited space is available and RSVPs are required. Kids and dogs are welcome. Martini Parties at Club Lucky continue every Tuesday and martinis are just $6. Head to Bucktown's Club Lucky this Tuesday for some of the best martinis in Chicago.

Dose Market  is back this weekend and will be filled with local businesses, food, sweets, jewelry, garments, housewares and more at The Chop Shop/ 1st Ward space at 2033 W. North Avenue.Also this weekend, Helena Quinn is hosting a trunk show featuring pieces from her Fall collection at Edith Hart in Bucktown 1917 N. Damen Avenue.

Tonight! The West Town Art Walk is back for its 3rd year. Tonight! The Flat Iron Artists bring  The Coyote - The Wicker Park/Bucktown Festival of the arts back into the neighborhood. A don't miss event every September, you'll find over 150 artists, musicians and sculptors at the Flat Iron all weekend long.. Also, this weekend Wicker Park's Public Works is hosting a special event where you can participate in a dialogue between several of the city's creative communities. Next week, the West Town Art Walk is back for its 3rd year. You can visit both local businesses and artists while walking throughout the neighborhood.

COMMUNITY EVENTS



Interesting and fun events are planned for the neighborhood this weekend and beyond. Tonight: the Summer wind down continues and the very last outdoor Open Mic, Wicker Mic, is taking place in Wicker Park proper. You'll find lots of local talent and the weather should be perfect. 

Free yoga is available every Saturday morning at 9am and 11am at Ready Coffee and Eb and flow is hosting a very special fundraiser next week. This fundraiser combines a Master Power Flow class with a party, including food and beverages, directly after the class.  

This weekend, the Wicker Park Farmers Market is also back on Sunday and is open from 8am - 2pm featuring fresh produce, cheese, meat, baked goods, flowers and more. 

And in neighborhood news: work is officially beginning on The Bloomingdale Trail this Monday. Parts of Bloomingdale Avenue and spots like Churchill Park will have restricted access. Last but not least, if you're looking for an inexpensive spot to stay in Wicker Park fully equipped with a kitchen, wifi and parking, allow us to introduce you to Holiday Jones. Now open and located right on Division Street.

Marky Ramone's Blitzkrieg with Andrew W.K. on Vocals

Music: One of the biggest monthly parties in town, Soul Summit Dance Party is back at Double Door again this weekend and it's FREE.  Also this weekend the Burgerama Caravan of Stars Tour arrives at Subterranean. Headliners include: The Growlers. Tonight, the Meat Puppets head to The Empty Bottle and on Saturday Chicago alternative rockers Pink Frost will also be at The Empty Bottle showcasing their unique brand of pop-rock for their record release party. Milwaukee Avenue. RUNA has officially opened in Wicker Park and is offering 30% off your next meal from Saturday September 28th through October 15th as part of their Grand Opening.Wicker Park's newest bar/restaurant/butcher/deli venue Chop Shop is set to open Monday. Another new spot getting ready to open The Hat on North Avenue. Owned by the team behind Hollywood Grill, The Hat will serve: hot dogs, hamburgers, gyros, shakes and more. 


Foodie Events: Cheat on Meat or Go Whole Beast heads to Chop Shop featuring 8 different Chefs and your choice of veggie dishes or the whole animal. And Wicker Park's Weekly Food Festival  The Nosh is back this Saturday from 10am -5pm.

Music: Tonight, the Disappears bring their minimalist approach and some of their best music to date to the Empty Bottle. You can catch them at their Era Record Release Show with Weekend, Outside World and DJ Bud Sweet for $14. A very special event and fundraiser is being hosted at Double Door next week. The Headliners Ball is a benefit for Street Level Youth Media and features Paul D. Miller aka DJ Spooky That Subliminal Kid. For ticket info and more: Headliners Ball.

Open Streets is also back this Sunday and Milwaukee Avenue will be closed to cars from Ashland to Kedzie. But you can run, bike, skateboard and more without worrying about traffic. Riot Fest also kicks off tonight with 80 incredible bands plus the farmers market and The Nosh continue.

Mark your calendars for next weekend when Wicker Park After Dark opens at Jackson Junge Gallery. Wicker Park After Dark  features photographer David Szpunar's perspective of the unique nightlife and many of the unusual things that happen in the neighborhood in the wee hours of the night.


 

COMMUNITY EVENTS



Two big events arrive this weekend in the neighborhood. First the annual Bucktown 5k is Sunday and participants take a scenic run through the neighborhood. There's still time to register if you haven't already. An expanded Open Streets also takes place on Sunday from 10am -3pm. And this year, the event includes Logan Square. Three miles of Milwaukee Avenue will be closed to cars from Ashland Avenue all the way to Kedzie. If you've never tried a Divvy bike but would like to. Now would be a great time. There are also lots of events planned for kids.

 

Also this weekend, the Wicker Park Farmers Market is back on Sunday and is open from 8am - 2pm featuring fresh produce, cheese, meat, baked goods, flowers and more. 


Things to put on your radar for next weekend: Circus in the Parks and the Twilight Tour of Wicker Park.

 

 

 

 

 ENTERTAINMENT

Music: The Riot Fest Music Festival and Carnival is this weekend and it's all happening right around the corner. The bands that have been booked this year are just incredible and include: The Replacements, Blink 182, Fall Out Boy, Pixies, Violent Femmes, Joan Jett, Blondie, Dinosaur Junior, Flag, Bob Mould, Guided by Voices and more. 80 bands in total will be featured plus there will be carnival rides, and lots of food and drink. The 3 day tickets sold out long ago but a few single day tickets are still available.


 After Shows for Riot Fest are selling out. Even if you're not going to the festival, you can still grab a great show right in the neighborhood.






FOOD & DRINK NEWS



Food -   A cute little Italian Deli has just opened on Western Avenue. Rosie's features sandwiches (like sub and meatball sandwiches), soups, salads, pizza, gourmet items, meats, cheeses and more. Their goal is to offer as much locally sourced and organic food as possible and the pizza we had was terrific. Rosie's West Town Deli


Wicker Park's Weekly Food Festival  The Nosh is back this Saturday from 10am -5pm. New participants are featured each week. This week includes: The Rice Table, Chicago's Dog House, Bad Happy, The Bento Box and many more ... even organic treats for dogs will be available. Dogs are welcome and there's no admission fee.


Drink - Bucktown's Red Door is hosting Slurp & Slush this weekend. And what is Slurp & Slush? It's an oyster shuck off between 3 notable Chicago Chefs. Your $40 ticket buys you food, drinks and appetizers. 





REAL ESTATE NEWS



This 22,000 square foot brick and limestone building at Potomac and Wood Street in Wicker Park was originally an orphanage in 1903 when it was first built. Over time it was converted into a single family residence. Yes you heard us: single family residence. And a little insight we'd love to share. We came across this incredible grocery store on Western Avenue called Amish Healthy Foods. Amish Healthy Foods is like a tiny little independent small business version of Whole Foods and the owners travel to an Amish community every Wednesday. They head back with fresh produce, eggs, cheese, butter, honey and too much list. A don't miss.

She paints incredible custom pictures. Also at Jackson Junge, Wicker Park After Dark opens in two weeks and features a photographer's perspective of Wicker Park nightlife.

Also this weekend, the wonderfully flamboyant and provocative rapper Mykki Blanco heads to Empty Bottle and if you RSVP via Do312, you can get in for free before 10pm. 


Early WarningThe After Shows for Riot Fest just went on sale and many shows have already sold out. So if you'd like to attend any of these, you'd better buy your tickets now. Green Music Fest Wicker Park's eco-friendly Summer festival, Green Music Fest heads back to Damen Avenue this Saturday and Sunday rain or shine. You'll find 'green' vendors and activities, lots of fun for kids, a preview of Divvy (Chicago's bike sharing program) and, of course, lots of food and music. Local and national acts headline. Eat. Drink. Learn Spanish Elena Chicago is kicking off their Summer session of beginner Spanish classes in Bucktown. The best news (beyond the fact that Elaine is an amazing teacher) is the classes are held at Club Lucky in a comfortable and relaxed environment. Skip the stuffy classroom this Summer and learn a new language.


Final Plans for Bloomingdale Trail Announced + New Name Plans for The Bloomingdale Trail are underway with groundbreaking right around the corner. This amazing project has a new name too. It's called The 606 and includes 5 additional ground level parks. The 606.

Celebrate the Flat Iron's 100th Birthday
Inspired by a turn-of-the-century neighborhood photo we published on Facebook, the team at Collaboraction wanted to celebrate this year's 100 year birthday of the Flat Iron Arts Building. So they created a very special event this weekend only. It's called The Decades and it's a don't miss. Plenty of theater and a party too. If you follow us on FB or Twitter then you know we gave away tickets for this event as well. The Decades.

Jerry's in Wicker Park is hosting the 2013 Independent Songwriter Festival. Kicks off June 26th.. Tickets are also on sale right now for this Mac Demarco Pitchfork Aftershow at The Empty Bottle.


Second Wave of Bands Announced for Wicker Park Fest -
In case you missed it earlier, additional bands for this Summer's Wicker Park Fest have been announced. The line up for 2013 includes: Man Man, Cults, Ted Leo, Meat Puppets and Mucca Pazza. Wicker Park Fest.





 

  RESTAURANT NEWS



Lillie's Q Special Sauce  - For a limited time only, you can score a bottle of Lillie's Q Bourbon Barrel Aged Smoky BBQ sauce. Only 200 bottles in total have been produced and this smoky sauce sat in Henry McKenna Bourbon 10 Year Single Vintage bourbon barrel for six months. You can pick up a bottle in the Wicker Park location (1856 W. North Avenue) but you'd better hurry. 


Le Colombe To Open in Fall- We reported last week that Red E Chicago was moving on to Milwaukee Avenue directly next to Taxim and an official location has been announced for Le Colombe. They're moving into the space currently the home of Greener Cleaners at 1522 N. Damen Avenue just steps away from Go Glazed and Cafe Transit opening in the Blue Line El Stop. Look for Le Colombe to open this Fall; specifically September or October. 

 

  SHOPPING NEWS



Greenheart Shop Heads East - We are sorry to report one of our favorite shops, Greenheart Shop, is leaving Wicker Park.The team behind this eco-friendly, fair trade-focused boutique at 1911 W. Division Street is packing up and heading to Old Town. Their last day in Wicker Park is July 21st and right now they're hosting a huge clearance sale with up to 75% off. Be sure to stop by before they close their doors in the neighborhood.
