HEADS UP: Street Sweeping Begins Tuesday

Thyra DeCicco - Monday, March 31, 2014

Heads up everyone: Street Sweeping begins again Tuesday April 1st in Chicago. So be sure to read those street signs when you park. In addition, Alderman Moreno has set up a text message reminder service if you're in the 1st Ward so you can avoid costly tickets.

This friendly reminder was issued by Alderman Moreno, 2058 N. Western Avenue, earlier today:

The beginning of spring (finally!) heralds the resumption of street sweeping season, which takes place between April 1 and November 30 every year. Starting tomorrow,City Department of Revenue agents will be vigorously enforcing parking restrictions on residential streets that are scheduled to be cleaned.

Although the 1st Ward has been remapped, the Dept. of Streets and Sanitation has not transitioned to the new ward boundaries. Therefore, for the entire 2014 street sweeping season, street sweeping will be working from the old ward maps and the same street sweeping schedule as last year.

My office was the first to provide text alerts for sweeping. This program has saved 1st Ward residents thousands of dollars in avoided parking tickets and has allowed for more effective street sweeping. If you signed up for this texting service last year, you will continue to receive these text alerts the evening before and the morning of your street being swept.

If you have not signed up yet, you can sign up for this free service here.

Michael Hamrick - Monday, March 24, 2014

This morning at approximately 2:50am an eight car Blue Line CTA train derailed at O'Hare International Airport after failing to stop and climbing up an escalator. Approximately 32 people were injured; none with life threatening injuries. Twenty-six of those passengers have been taken to area hospitals for bumps and bruises. Six people had more serious injuries. Almost all passengers have been released.

At this time the CTA is running shuttle buses between the Rosement Blue Line el stop and O'Hare International Airport. It will take approximately 24 hours to remove the train cars from the tracks so the shuttles are expected to continue into tomorrow. The rest of the Blue Line train is roughly on schedule.

There is no reason yet for why the train failed to stop and an investigation is underway.

Down and Dirty Double Door St. Paddy's Party

Michael Hamrick - Monday, March 10, 2014

Down and Dirty Double Door St. Paddy's Party

Keep the kids home and start working out that stomach,
because this event is not for the weak.  The rock band
Beer Nuts are headlining the most outrageous 2014 St.
Patrick's Day party in Chicago. It all goes down at Double
Door Monday, March 17th (yes the ACTUAL St. Paddy's Day)
and ladies get in the door free of charge.
If Eminem's albums deserved a parental advisory label
on them, a Beer Nuts album would be uncharted territory
of hysterical raunchiness.  The RIAA doesn't have a label
for how ridiculous these songs are.  Songs like Blow Me
For Beer, and Got The Yea Yo go hand in hand with one
of Chicagoans' favorite St. Patrick's Day past-times,
getting good and drunk.

Mexican Werewolf, She's Crafty, and Yeowulf make up the rest of
night's lineup. Mexican Werewolf describes themselves as, "Ugly
dudes playing ugly music for other ugly dudes." It's only half true.
They play high energy rock n' roll with the best of them, but their
message is what the whole night is about. Come one, come all.
No one at this St. Paddy's Day party cares what you look like,
it's just time to party.

What would a St. Patrick's day party be without She's Crafty,
Chicago's all-female Beastie Boys tribute?  Just in case anyone
any trouble, they'll be leading the fight for the right to PARTAYYY!
Yeowulf will be starting the night off as the appetizer to the
hearty dish of humor-laden hard rock and ferociously
unadulterated party music.

Michael Hamrick - Thursday, March 06, 2014

Bloomindale Trail Closes Western Avenue

Over the next few weeks, crews will be removing, replacing and upgrading the major bridges along the Bloomingdale Trail, the centerpiece of The 606.
The first phase will happen this weekend, with the removal of the bridge across Western, this Friday through Sunday (March 7-9). Work will start at 8:00 p.m. on Friday and continue 24-hours/day until complete.
This means Western Avenue will be closed between Wabansia (1700N) and Winnebago/Cortland (1900N) during construction and all cars, buses, and pedestrians will have to follow a detour. A detour map is available here.

Michael Hamrick - Saturday, March 01, 2014

Wicker Wire:  We reported earlier that Trader Joe's has set their sights on the former Miller Lumber site at 1815 W. Division Street (Division Street and Honore) just West of the LaSalle II Elementary School in Wicker Park for their next location. The first meeting with the developer is scheduled for Monday March 3rd and 6:00pm at the LaSalle II Elementary School where preliminary plans will be presented.
