Wicker Park - May 19, 2014 - One part music, one part eco-living is the recipe behind the annual Wicker Park Green Music Fest.   For a sixth consecutive year, Wicker Park Green Music Fest will rock Chicagoans into making environmentally-conscious choices in their lives this summer. This year's new 'petal powered' stage has raised the bar.Besides cyclists providing the natural wattage for the music, this unique Chicago street festival pairs culturally relevant musical performances alongside vendors championing green business practices, with demonstrations, arts & crafts and family activities - all wrapped up into one summer weekend, Saturday, June 21 and Sunday, June 22.

By embracing established and emerging green technology, products, and services, Wicker Park Green Music Fest's 2014 mission encompasses an accessible community of culturally significant programming, engaged and informed communities, and sustainable lifestyles.

The Green Music:

Two stages feature non-stop live music all weekend, with everything from cutting-edge local groups to national touring headliners like Moon Taxi and Guided By Voices, who have recorded six high-quality full-length albums in less than four years. If the sorry state of the present day indie- alt- or just plain rock landscape is the disease, groups like Guided By Voices is the cure.

The Bicycle Powered Stage:

Since news of the Bicycle Powered Music Stage broke last month, the response has been overwhelming.  The incredible outpouring from interested cyclists has led to bike clubs and shops, such as Roscoe Village Bikes, forming teams to cover power shifts.   During these stints, eight stationary bikes will provide the natural energy source for the main stage's amps, guitars, spotlights, etc.  Cycling teams, spinning instructors and bike enthusiasts alike are still encouraged to participate - all in effort to promote green transportation.  California-based Rock the Bike is providing Wicker Park Green Music Fest with the special equipment and expertise.  The cycles will be plugged into a generator, and the faster people petal, the more energy they create for the music.

The fest's management company, Criterion Productions, has a goal of signing up 500 volunteers - from experienced cyclists to novices - to man shifts lasting anywhere from 10 minutes long to a couple of hours.  People interested in riding at Wicker Park Green Music Fest can email info@criterionproductions.com.

The Green Production:

Wicker Park Green Music Fest goes above and beyond the City of Chicago requirements to provide reliable collection and follow-through of recycling and composting on festival grounds.  The producers of Wicker Park Green Music Fest have again partnered with local sustainability consulting firm Bright Beat to ensure that recyclable or compostable items are used at the fest, then properly handled, to prevent contamination and maximize the material diverted from landfills.  "Eco Educators" will be positioned at zero waste stations to guide people on proper disposal, and share helpful tips to bring those green practices home.  A few other on-site initiatives include a program designed to encourage bicycling to and from the festival, a biodiesel fueled North Stage (opposite the Bicycle Powered Stage, of course), cutting-edge green-focused art, and environmental stewardship.

The Green Vendors & Activities:

Throughout the green vendor village, you can: find out how to save money and make your home efficient; buy local fresh and organic treats; explore interesting vendors of unique, environmentally-friendly crafts and products; enjoy food & drink served with compostable food service items from some of the most popular neighborhood restaurants; or check out new clean technologies and green inventions.  In addition to some of the best live tunes of the summer concert season, Wicker Park Green Music Fest will show you how we can begin to make a difference with small changes to our own lives and how we can build on these changes with our neighbors.

The Green Family Fun Fest:

Presented by the Wicker Park Parents' Association, the Green Family Fun Fest at Wicker Park Green Music Fest provides plenty of fun-filled and educational children's activities throughout the weekend (from noon to 5 pm each day), including: recycled arts & crafts, DIY musical instruments, henna artists, bounce house, mini-golf, kiddie play area, and children's musical programming. The Wicker Park Parents' Association has partnered with the Chicago Park District to provide funding and kids' programming at Wicker Park, including a college application prep program to start in Fall 2014.

The Green Fine Print:

There is a $5 suggested donation for admission to Wicker Park Green Music Fest.  Location: Damen between North and Schiller -- just across from Wicker Park at 1425 N. Damen Avenue. Hours of operation both days: noon to 10 pm (Wicker Park Green Family Fun Fest hours are noon to 5 pm both days).  The event is dog-friendly (with leashes).  The event beneficiary is Wicker Park Parents' Association. The funding benefits children's programming in the park.   Wicker Park Green Music Fest 2014 is sponsored in part by: New Belgium Brewery (greenest brewery in the US), Clif Bar, Red Bull, and WXRT.

Elston-Ashland-Webster Mariano's Opens June 3rd

Michael Hamrick - Tuesday, May 06, 2014

In the works for several years, it’s official: the 80,000 square foot Mariano’s  at 2112 N. Ashland Avenue (Ashland/Webster/Elston) will open their doors on June 3 according to a company spokesman and reported by theChicago Sun-Times.

The new Bucktown store will open at 6 a.m. on June 3, sits on 4 acres and will be Mariano’s 10th store in the city of Chicago after Tuesday’s opening of a Mariano’s in a former Dominick’s store at 3145 S. Ashland in Bridgeport.

The Bucktown store is a brand new building that will employ 550 workers. We’re very curious to see how a Mariano’s from scratch will compare to those stores that were former Dominick’s stores and have recently become Mariano’s like the store at Chicago and Damen Avenue (2021 W. Chicago Avenue).

According to the Sun-Times report, the Mariano’s grocery stores are run by Milwaukee-based parent company Roundy’s,whose CEO Bob Mariano spent 27 years working his way to the top job at Dominick’s, which he ran from 1995 to 1998.

Mariano has said previously that his stores will employ 10,000 by year’s end after the chain expands to 29 stores throughout the Chicago area.

Wicker Park's Staples Closes Saturday

Michael Hamrick - Wednesday, April 30, 2014

As small business owners in Wicker Park, we're very sorry to report the Staples at 1300 N. Ashland Avenue is closing this Saturday May 3rd. They've been the perfect place to go when you run out of ink or printer paper at just the wrong time.

Staples announced earlier this year that 225 stores would be closing nationally so the office supply retailer could focus more of their business online. However, this is not the only reason the Wicker Park location is closing. Staples representatives stated the increasing rents in this shopping center were another reason they have decided to close this location.

Because Staples has a number of retail stores in the area (including 2484 N. Elston and 4610 N. Clark), they just aren't willing to pay the increase in rent stated one of their managers.

Last year we reported Centrum Partners LLC had purchased the shopping center at 1272 N. Milwaukee Avenue (including Jewel, K-Mart, Stapes, The Vitamin Shoppe and now Potbelly's). Following the renovation being done this year, businesses have opted to leave that location versus paying the higher rents now expected by Centrum Partners.

Staples is joining Blockbuster and Oberweis who left the shopping center earlier this year. There is no official word on who will be moving into this location.

Damen To Western Blue Line Closed This Weekend

Construction continues on the CTA Blue Line this weekend for Your New Blue, the $492 million dollar project dedicated to station improvements and improved speed on the CTA's O'Hare Blue Line. Shuttles will be available between the 2 stations. The Blue Line is expected to reopen between these 2 stations on Monday April 28, 2014 at 4:00am.

If it's anything like it was earlier this month, expect delays on Milwaukee, North and Western Avenue. Not only were delays encountered between stops due to the bus shuttles but traffic was slowed at North-Damen-Milwaukee and on Western Avenue due to road closures. We will update this information with road closures when they become available.
