Boo Palooza - Record Turnout in Wicker Park - Photos

Michael Hamrick - Wednesday, November 02, 2011

Partnering with Wicker Park's Building Block Toys, we had the best time at Boo Palooza in Wicker Park this year and are excited to report a record turnout!  Over 2,000 people attended this year's event in the Park which focused on children and dogs. Costume parades, apple bobbing, puppet shows and more were all showcased last Saturday October 29th 2011 from 10am -2pm in Wicker Park proper: 1425 N. Damen Avenue.

The event was supported by over 33 local businesses and facilitated by the Wicker Park Advisory Council.

If you were there, check the photos. We took lots of pictures of the cutest - and nicest - kids ever!

Your Wicker Park Bucktown Insider Weekend Guide - Halloween Edition - 10/27/11

Michael Hamrick - Thursday, October 27, 2011
October 27, 2011

Good morning and welcome to this week's edition of your  Insider Weekend Guide. This week our focus is on Halloween and the festive events happening throughout the neighborhood.

But a little bit of spooky trivia first: did you know a few of our businesses have claims of being haunted? Our neighbors at The Congress Theatre were featured in a Ghost Hunters episode in 2009 due to the paranormal activity being reported there. But that's not all. In the 1970's a man was shot and killed at Bucktown's Club Lucky. They still have the evidence of the gunshots in the bar. And at night, when the employees are getting ready to close, they occasionally hear footsteps walking in the bar. But of course... no one is there. Just a few stories to set the mood for the week.

As always, there are many fantastic events happening throughout the neighborhood and we're happy to be your Guide. Almost every bar is having a party but there's so much more. Our picks are included below. Have a terrific weekend and we'll see you in the neighborhood.

   Bars

  Halloween Bar Events

Almost every bar is having a Halloween Party and/or costume contest so you really can't miss if you head to any bar in the neighborhood on Saturday night. The Fifty/50 is offering a $300 cash prize for their winner for best costume. But there are other events planned as well including:  Lottie's Road Trip to the haunted house Screams in the Park tonight!

  Pumpkin Party - Small Bar

Looking for something a little different than the traditional Bar Halloween Party?  Head to Wicker Park's Small Bar. Small Bar is known for their soccer - and great beer. And this weekend Small Bar will be hosting their Pumpkin Party. You can try a variety of pumpkin beer, candies and cupcakes.

Miss Wicker Park Finals

We sure hope you've voted. The 10 Finalists for the Miss Wicker Park Contest head to the Double Door on Thursday October 27th. The contest is open to everyone but our fingers are crossed that the winner will be from the neighborhood. After all...it is called Miss Wicker Park.

  Community Events

This weekend is Festival Weekend and includes: Oktoberfest, The Coyote - Festival of the Arts, The Backyard Film and Music Fest, Moonshine's Rib-A-Que and The Empty Bottle's 5 day Adventures in Modern Music taking center stage but that's not all. You'll also find new gallery exhibitions, lectures, jazz and so much more. We also have a few exciting updates regarding new bar and restaurant openings just for good measure. Know of any others? Just let us know and we'll include them.

This week, we've also included an update on new bars opening soon. The focus is on Division Street. Gourmet burgers and signature cocktails are heading our way. This Sunday don't miss the Bucktown 5k! Great exercise and its a terrific fundraiser for Gilda's Cub. On Monday, Christy Webber will be the speaker for the Wicker Park Garden Club's Lecture series. Buying an old pick up truck in in 1988 and a small amount of lawn mowing equipment, Christy began cutting grass around the Wicker Park neighborhood. With determination and hard work, she has become one of the largest landscape companies in Chicago and you can see her Monday.  Next up? Mark your calendars and hone those baking skills. The Bucktown Apple Pie Contest is just around the corner.

A number of new restaurants are heading in to the neighborhood including - you guessed it - more sushi. Nori a Japanese/Sushi spot based in Lincoln Park is expanding into the Wicker Park and Rogers Park neighborhoods and is scheduled to open in mid-October. And unfortunately, MELT's opening has been postponed due to "city issues". Not uncommon. This week we've also included an Allergy-Friendly Directory. Lots of folks are looking for gluten-free and more. So we've compiled a handy guide to those eateries who are sensitive to food allergies. Many thanks to all who contributed to our Directory!

We haven't seen an official press announcement but the word on the street is that the former owners of Wicker Park's Earwax Cafe have signed a lease with billion dollar company Dr. Martens.  The brown paper is officially up on the windows.     Theater

The BackYard Fim & Music Fest is back on the north side this year after a brief hiatus on the south side last year.  And yes founder Fred Koschmann really did set up a projector in his backyard, hung a bed sheet for a screen, put out lawn chairs, and invited some 40 friends over to view two of his short films in 2008 when the fest first started. What can you expect on on Saturday?  From 2pm-6pm 16 local and international short films will be featured at the Wicker Park Arts Center. Additional details follow.  Also don't miss Cyrano. The quintessential Renaissance man is at The Chopin and you'll get your money's worth with a good old-fashioned sword fight included in the price of admission.

Yes the Renegade Craft Fair is finally here and we couldn't be more excited. This last hurrah for Summer, this fest showcases over 300 very talented indie craft designers and makers who will be bringing beautiful and unique crafts to Division Street in Wicker Park. Last year Renegade was the place to be and this year will be no different. For your convenience, we've also included handy reminders for the bars and restaurants right on Division so you can find a cool place to hang out afterward.

We have received many questions regarding the timing of the Wicker Park Farmers Market. As a friendly reminder, the Wicker Park Farmers market (located in Wicker Park proper) ) is open until October 30th. The Farmers Market located at Milwaukee/Ashland/Division will be open until September 29th. So there's still plenty of time to support your local farmers and businesses.  The last big Summer Fest of the season "Renegade" will be upon us next weekend. So tell your friends and come celebrate our last big Summer street fest on Division Street.
