Wicker Park Bucktown Insider's Guide

Wicker Park's Intelligentsia Says Late Fall For Opening

Michael Hamrick - Tuesday, October 29, 2013

Wicker Wire: For those who may not know, Intelligentsia and PNC will be sharing the commercial space at 1611 W. Division Street; in the new high rise located on the corner of Ashland/Division.  Initially Intelligentsia thought they would have their Wicker Park location open by the end of October. But the opening date has been changed and the new date is a little more ambiguous. The team at Intelligentsia is currently in the design stage and they're hoping to open late Fall.

We will keep you posted.

The Cars, KISS, Queens of the Stone Age And More This Week at Double Door

Michael Hamrick - Monday, October 28, 2013

Slutter as KISS
Don't Miss The Double Door's 17th Annual Halloween Bash; one of our very favorite neighborhood events of the year. October 31st. Doors at 8pm. Show at 9pm. Tickets just $10. Who's on the agenda this year? The Cars, KISS, Motorhead, Queens of the Stone Age and many more. Plus the bash continues for 2 full days. On November 1st, you can see Joan Jett, Janis Joplin, Tom Petty....the list goes on and on.

Slutter as KISS

Slutter as KISS
SLUTTER is the finest all-female KISS revue in the country. Featuring four of Chicago's hottest and most talented creatures of the night, this quartet of hard luck women has the magic touch to resurrect the energy of the original KISS shows 100,000 years ago. Clad in traditional KISS make up, leather, vinyl, studs, and spacesuits, SLUTTER features the hissing, purring, shedding Peterless Criss, the sexually ambiguous, always inappropriate starchild GG Stanley, the gluttonous, self-aggrandizing goddess of thunder Vagene Simmons, and the firey, radioactive Lace SHEley.

AM Taxi as The Cars
AM Taxi as The Cars
With a blend of old-school punk, world beat and modern pop influences, Chicago-based AM Taxi combines experience with exuberance on their Virgin Records debut, We Don’t Stand A Chance. The band was formed almost two years ago—with the encouragement of Sublime producer Miguel Happoldt—by longtime Windy City bandmates and pals, singer/songwriter Adam Krier, drummer Chris Smith and bassist Jason Schultejann. The trio began writing and recording and produced their first EP, Runaway Songs. Shortly after, they were joined by brothers John and Luke Schmitt on guitar and keyboards. AM Taxi began establishing a rep as a dynamic live outfit with headlining performances at local clubs like the Metro and soon after recorded their second EP, The Good, The Bad and The Fed Up. .

There are also songs about things everyone can identify with, like a couple in which no matter how much he messes up, she takes him back (“Charissa”) or New Year’s resolutions gone bad (“Champagne Toast”).

“I try to write songs about things people can relate to,” nods Adam. “For me, the best music, at the end of the day, is therapeutic. That’s always in the back of my mind a little when I’m sitting down to write.”

Big Paraid and Brighton MA as Queens of The Stone Age
Big Paraid and Brighton MA as Queens of The Stone Age
BIG PARAID, the aggressive crush pop trio out of Chicago, released their debut record in March of 2013. Since then, they have marched on through the House Of Blues, Metro, the Taste Of Lincoln Ave, and Lincoln Hall. They have also made handsome appearances on the Mancow Morning TV Show, Chicago's own JBTV, and the trio has told the exciting truth to radio DJs on WXRT, WBEZ, and WLUL.

The BIG PARAID live experience, which encompasses bombastic original rock songs, choreographed dancers, and a confetti cannon, is not one to be missed.

Brighton MA is a five-piece rock band from Chicago. Named for lead singer/songwriter Matt Kerstein's hometown, Brighton MA has existed in various forms since 2006. In the past year, founding members Kerstein, Sam Koentopp, and Jim Tuerk have been joined by Joe Darnaby and Jon Ozaksut to develop their most cohesive sound to date. BMA has built a reputation throughout the Midwest on a series of blistering live performances and a catalog of undeniably tuneful and well-crafted songs, heard on such prime-time television shows such as Gossip Gir, One Tree Hill and Castle. The diversity of songs has led them to share the stage with a number of noteworthy and disparate sounding performers, from Old 97s, Elvis Perkins, and Mason Jennings, to Man Man, The Essex Green, and Appleseed Cast to name a few. With an ever-expanding catalog and a quickly building fanbase, Brighton MA are a band on the rise and poised to break through.

BMA is currently working on their as of yet untitled third LP, a followup to Amateur Lovers [2008] and the self-titled debut EP [2007].

IL State Law Mandates Cars Yield To Pedestrians

Michael Hamrick - Monday, October 28, 2013

Photo: Division and Paulina - Wicker Park

In light of the fact that it's Halloween week and a lot of people will be out (including kids) here's a friendly reminder to all people driving in Illinois: It is not optional to stop at pedestrian crosswalks. It is an Illinois State Law.

If you're driving a car in Illinois, you should be familiar with this law. If you're not, here's what you need to know effective 2010:

Illinois drivers must come to a complete stop for pedestrians in all crosswalks.

Definition of “crosswalk”
There are several kinds of crosswalks.
• Signalized: These are crosswalks at stop signs and traffic signals.
• Unsignalized: These are crosswalks that don’t have a stop sign or traffic signal. They are also referred to as “mid-block crosswalks.”
• Marked: These are the crosswalks you can see. Painted lines on the road designate their location.
• Unmarked: Not all crosswalks are marked with paint. The law is filled with jargon (see below) but simply put, a crosswalk is present whenever a sidewalk leads into the street.

Illinois drivers must come to a complete stop for pedestrians in any of those crosswalks: marked, unmarked, signalized or unsignalized.

Legal Definition of a Crosswalk

Illinois defines crosswalks as “That part of a roadway at an intersection included within the connections of the lateral lines of the sidewalks on opposite sides of the highway measured from the curbs, and in the absence of a sidewalk on one side of the highway, that part of the highway included within the extension of the lateral line of the existing sidewalk to the side of the highway without the sidewalk” (625 ILCS 5/1-113 (a))

Violation penalties

Penalties for violating this law vary by county and may include fines and court costs. Cook County penalties start at $50 and may include court costs.

Take action

You can take action if a car does not come to a complete stop while you are in a crosswalk. Call 911 and report them. If possible, record the license plate number and include that along with your location in your police report.

If you don't yield for a pedestrian in a cross walk, you're breaking Illinois State law. And you can be reported and fined. But is that really necessary?

Apparently, with the number of drivers failing to yield to pedestrians, it is.

Prices are expected to range from $130-$170 per night.

The project also includes the Hollander Fireproof Warehouse. An additional 24 "shared rooms" are planned for this space.

The team behind the development, Convexity Properties, is planning a March 2014 start date for construction and hopes to have the new boutique hotel open by 2015. They are currently identifying who the hotel operator will be.
