Kanye West Shuts Down Milwaukee Ave Wicker Park

As someone who used to work in the music industry, we can certainly attest to the fact that it's getting tougher and tougher to market musicians. Back in the day, MTV used to showcase new artists and music. Now they feature the Jersey Shore. But despite those challenges, Def Jam created a unique and effective way to create a buzz.

Launching in 66 locations worldwide, Def Jam Records showed a preview of Kanye West's new music video "New Slaves" all in outdoor locations on the sides of buildings. In Chicago, the viewing locations included the Walgreens at North/Damen/Milwaukee Avenue Friday night; shutting down traffic. The locations were announced via the website kanyewest.com.

Sure not everyone was happy but kudos to Def Jam for developing a creative way to break through advertising clutter...7 locations in Chicago were part of the plan including: Wrigley Field, Northwestern University and North Michigan Avenue.

More Rentals Head to Wicker Park

We reported back in February about the sale of this majestic and iconic church in Wicker Park located at Damen + Evergreen. This property (including the house just West of it) sold for only $1.3 million which is less than the value of the land alone. According to a report published today, it's going to be a rental building with 11 two-bedroom rental units planned for the space pending a zoning variance. These rentals should be available Fall 2014.

RESTAURANT NEWS

Flash Taco Make Over - After 15+ years, we noticed the iconic sign at North/Damen/Milwaukee had been removed. And, as it turns out Flash Taco is getting a very fancy little makeover. New decor and a dj booth are part of the plans.

Lillie's Q Re-Opening - Issued via a press release this week, Lillie's Q announced they will be re-opening their doors on North Avenue very soon. Very positive news. Last March a large fire swept through Lillie's and it was not certain at that time whether they could re-open or not. Look for the doors to open again in June.

Spring Restos On Our Radar - The paper is off the windows and MAK is hiring for their new healthy eatery located in the former home of Renegade Craft on Division and Mott Street chefs were spotted in the kitchen this week. Can an opening be far behind? Both of these new Wicker Park restaurants are on our radar for Spring Openings.

Weekend Events - This weekend don't miss the Anne Sportun Trunk Show happening at Bucktown's Virtu 2034 N. Damen Avenue. Also this weekend, Wed Local features local neighborhood artisans, shops, vendors and venues for those planning their nuptials.

Lillie's Q Bucktown To Re-Open in June

Lillie's Q at 1856 W. North Avenue has been closed since last March due to a large fire that swept through this neighborhood eatery.

But Chef Charlie McKenna has announced the barbeque spot is targeted to re-open again this June:

Historic Wicker Park Church Listed for $1.5 Million

Wicker Park- Last February we reported on this historic church which was listed for $1.5 million and sold for $1.3 million before the listing was even published. An incredible value located in Wicker Park's historic district at Damen and Evergreen, this property sold for less than land value.

According to a report published today, it appears this incredible building is going to be turned into 11 two-bedroom rentals.

Owned by real estate company, JAB, plans are to retain the architectural details and restore the character if the doors and windows if possible. If all goes well, the rental units should be available Fall 2014.

Wicker Park- February 26, 2013

This beautiful church currently located at 2016 W. Evergreen (Damen & Evergreen) was going to be listed for $1.5 million dollars. But the property sold before the listing information could even be published on the Illinois Multiple Listing Service.

An absolute steal at $1.5 million dollars, the price reflects the value of the land and doesn't take into consideration the value of the structure. In fact, on the MLS it's actually now listed as "land" for sale. So whoever bought this property in less than a day just got themselves an incredible deal -- and they know it.

The listing agent, Tom Moran, confirmed this beautiful turn-of-the-century building is located in Wicker Park's historic landmark district so the structure is protected and cannot be torn down. The new owner will need to work with the Chicago Landmarks Commission and Wicker Park Preservation Team regarding any future plans. The property is currently under contract and has not yet closed transferring ownership. So we don't know who the future the owners will be and/or what their plans are at this time.

Farmers Market - Wicker Park Proper

The opening of the very popular Wicker Park Farmers Market hosted at 1425 N. Damen Avenue in Wicker Park proper is just around the corner. Participants include everything from fresh produce to flowers to baked goods and cookies for your dogs: Farmers Market.

Historic Walking Tours

The Chicago Architecture Foundation is hosting Historic Walking Tours throughout the neighborhood this Summer and early Fall. With its history as a community dating back to the 1870's, you can explore everything from Victorian mansions to the commercial districts. Walking Tours.

Learnapalooza has come and gone for the year. Each year Learnapalooza provides an incredible opportunity for people to participate in workshops/classes for FREE. The green technology-themed event combines cutting edge, environmentally-conscious bands with green vendors and activities.

What can you find at the Green Music Fest? Food, fun and of course, great music. In addition the to the great music, food and drink, there are also many activities for kids throughout the day.

The Green Theme

The Green Music Fest is an opportunity for thousands of people who care for the environment to unite to enjoy high quality music and discover new ways to go "green." There will be local retail, art and craft vendors, plus a green vendor village.

With the support of the City of Chicago Department of Environment's Chicago Center for Green Technology, who is sponsoring the green section of the event, an estimated 60-plus vendors and sponsors will participate in the second annual Green Music Fest. A number of new restaurants are opening in Wicker Park and Bucktown this year. But these 2 spots look like they're opening very soon...and we're looking very forward to both.

MAK- 1924 W. Division Street - Wicker Park

MAK has moved into the former home of Renegade Craft and will focus on healthy Asian fare and locally sourced food. The paper is off the windows. Chefs have been testing the menu and they're hiring their staff. We do have a call in to MAK and anticipate they will be open by the time Do Division arrives May 31st- June 2nd.

Mott Street - 1401 N. Ashland Avenue - Wicker Park

The team behind the very successful Ruxbin is opening a 2nd spot in the former home of MC Restaurant. What can you expect to find at Mott Street? Late night street food that combines influences from all over the world. They are also working on an outdoor space that may include a farmer's market, vegetable garden and outdoor movies.

We spotted the chefs in the kitchen of this resto last night so an opening looks like it's just around the corner.

On a warm day like today, you can't help but think about swimming pools.The Holstein Park and Pulaski Park Pools officially open for the season on June 19, 2013. Feels late doesn't it?

Holstein Park is located at 2200 N. Oakley Street in Bucktown and offers a large pool and 'kiddie' pool for small children. A link to their current hours for both the adult pool and kiddie pool is here. It's best to check the Friends of Holstein Park vs the Chicago Park District for the most current information available. Pulaski Park is located at 1419 N. Blackhawk Street. A link to their hours and current information can be found on the Chicago Park District Website.

The creative and talented team behind Ruxbin opens a second spot in Wicker Park; in the former home of MC Restaurant. Named after a combination of Mott Street in New York and the Korean word for 'taste' Mott Street is targeting a Spring opening. The food will combine flavors and influences and will focus more on flavorful, spicy food you might find at a late night market.

Big plans are also underway for the outdoor space. A farmers' market, a vegetable garden, a place to host picnics and movies are also in their long-term plans.

Wicker Park's Flash Taco Getting Make-Over

For 15 years, Flash Taco has been a late night staple at 1570 N. Damen; right at the corner of North/Damen/Milwaukee Avenue in Wicker Park. Their iconic sign has stood the test of time. But the sign is gone. And soon a neon one will be in its place. Lucha Libre masks and flat screen tvs will also don the remodeled space.

A make-over is underway and not only will Flash Taco getting a new look, they're also getting adding a DJ booth.

The menu is getting an overhaul as well and will include more veggie options. Flash Taco will be closed beginning Monday May 13th to begin their transformation. Welcome to the 5th Annual Chicago Craft Beer Week taking place from May 16th - May 26th.

The goal is to encourage people to explore the depth and breadth of local craft beer and honor those who enrich the community of beer lovers.

It’s expected that more than 250 venues will participate this year, offering special $4 tastings of rare beers and other special events throughout the week. Festivities will begin with the “Beer Under Glass” event at Garfield Park Conservatory and end with the closing party at Revolution Brewing’s new production facility.

Bike Sharing Program Expands to 22 Locations- Wicker Park, Bucktown, Logan Square and More

Alderman Moreno announced today that 25 bike sharing stations will be added to the 1st Ward including: Wicker Park, Ukrainian Village, East Village, Bucktown, Logan Square and Humboldt Park.

22 of the 25 stations will be added this year. For a full list of bike sharing (DIVVY) locations currently in the works. Divvy.

Divvy will provide residents and visitors with a transportation option available 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. Users will be able to purchase $75 yearly memberships or $7 daily passes, which will allow for unlimited trips up to 30 minutes each. Annual members will be able to enroll online at www.divvybikes.com and receive a personal key used to quickly unlock bikes from any station.

Divvy is expected to launch around Bike to Work Day on June 14, with about 75 stations. The program will expand to include at least 4,000 bikes at 400 stations citywide in 2014.

Fashion Retailer Gant Heads To Bucktown

Looks like another mega-brand is heading to Bucktown's Damen Avenue. Chicago Real Estate Daily is reporting that Gant is moving into 1702 N. Damen Avenue (the former home of Ener Spa).

"Damen Avenue in Bucktown has become increasingly known for its boutique retailing, making Gant a good fit for the property, said Ian Feinerman, senior commercial broker at Chicago-based @properties" who brokered the deal for his father; who also happens to be the landlord.

According to a Gant spokesperson, "Gant chose the Bucktown site because the firm focuses on neighborhood locations for its stores.

Look for Gant to open mid-July.

Wicker Park's Takito Kitchen Raises the Bar

When word arrived that Wicker Park was going to soon have a new taco spot, we were happy to hear the news; despite the fact the neighborhood is filled with go-to consistently good eateries like Antique Taco and, of course, Big Star.

The news got even better when the Takito team announced they were adding Carnivale Chef Dworshak. And according to Chicago Reader's, Mike Sula, the food - and drink - at Takito Kitchen may soon be attracting customers from all over the city.

A glimpse into the menu. As far as precursors to the meal go: "There's an outstanding Yucatan-style chile soup, made murky with a green spice blend and thickened with meaty shredded chicken. There's a supersmooth guacamole tarted up with pickled garlic. And there's a bowl of rich, fatty polenta sprinkled with pickled chiles, bacon, and dehydrated corn that lends a much-needed crunch..."

For the entrees: Chef "Dworshak goes off script, subtly weaving in the influences of other parts of the planet."

Crispy redfish is cradled in a purple-tinted hibiscus tortilla and seasoned with toasted coconut and coconut custard, which gives it an unmistakable southeast Asian character. The pork belly is dressed with mozzarella and served on a black sesame-studded tortilla. The best taco in the joint, the "lamb chorizo," is a single sizzling link.. draped with a charred and melted slab of Scandinavian Brun-uusto cheese and sprinkled with crushed peanut.

The sides, desserts and the tequila-and mezcal-based cocktails bring the dining experience to a whole new level.

Bike Sharing Heads to Wicker Park

According to a report published by Our Urban Times, Wicker Park and East Village will be included in Chicago's new bike sharing program called: DIVVY.

Plans are in the works to include bike stations at the Polish Triangle (the intersection of Milwaukee Avenue/Division Street/Ashland). While the program will be launching 300 sites in phases starting this summer, the exact date and location for the Triangle's stations have not been determined, according to a CDOT spokesperson. "Most people want to know how many bikes will be there, but the space is really based on docking stations. I believe there will be 19, which takes 56 feet long by 6 feet wide."

Divvy is expected to launch around Bike to Work Day on June 14, with about 75 stations. The program will expand to include at least 4,000 bikes at 400 stations citywide in 2014.

Wicker Park's Links Taproom To Feature Beer and Sausages

We reported last year that Bin Wine Cafe had closed at 1559 N. Milwaukee Avenue and today DNA Info has confirmed that a new craft beer bar will be opening in its place.

The new space is currently operating under the name Links Taproom and according to today's report, managing partner Mike Quinlan has provided a few details about the new space:

"Links Taproom will feature 32 American beers on tap, 4 cask beers, 4 tap wines and large format bottled beer list meant for sharing. Links will serve house-made sausages and hand-cut fries from our kitchen..."

Although it was reported earlier that Bin Wine Cafe was re-concepting into more of a gastropub, it is unclear from today's report whether the team behind Bin Wine Cafe is still involved in this new bar. Look for Links Taproom to open late Summer or early Fall.

Le Colombe to Open 2nd Chicago Location in Bucktown

With locations currently in New York, Philadelphia, Seoul and Chicago (955 W. Randolph), Le Colombe is currently working on opening a brand new cafe in Bucktown. The specific location has not yet been disclosed but according to an article published in Crain's Chicago Business it will be close to the Damen Blue Line El stop and will offer no wi-fi so the focus can remain on the coffee.

The Chicago Le Colombe Team also says the new spot will have ample seating and they are looking to partner with an acclaimed pastry chef who will work with both Chicago locations (Bucktown/West Loop).

Interesting that the specific location hasn't been disclosed yet but the build out is underway. We will let you know as soon as we know. Look for Le Colombe to open in Bucktown in September.

Chicago Flea Market Heads to Wicker Park

Chicago Flea Market has announced they are bringing a traditional flea market with a brand new twist right to the heart of Wicker Park on May 5th and June 2nd. You could say it's a little like "etsy" that has come to life.

Chicago Flea Market will bring some of the Midwest's most talented artisans to 2009 W. Schiller Street (AN Pritzker School) and the market will be hosted out in the open air.

The flea market will feature art, clothing, jewelry, accessories, and vintage pieces. But that's not all. They will also bring some of Chicago's hottest food trucks to the market including: DucknRoll, 5411 Empanadas, Bridgeport Pasty, and The Slide Ride.

Last but not least, a group of artists from One Stage Bird will be offering art classes throughout the day. This sounds like a great addition to the neighborhood.

There will be a $5 donation requested for admittance to Do-Division that will benefit local non-profits: the West Town Chamber of Commerce, Division Street Committee, and three local elementary schools: A.N. Pritzker, LaSalle Magnet II, and De Diego. Hours of operation both days are noon to 10 pm (and the Family Fun Fest is open from noon to 6 pm both days).

Sex Sells: The Power & Influence of Sexual Imagery is a new group exhibit at Jackson Junge Gallery, 1389 N Milwaukee in Chicago, IL. The exhibit runs from May 8- July 7, 2013. An opening reception with the artists is scheduled for the evening of Friday, May 10th (6pm -9pm). Reception and exhibit are free to the public. The group exhibit features the work of 32 artists utilizing various mediums including photography, ceramic, painting, and mixed media.

Sex piques your interest and draws you in, so for the briefest of moments you are open to whatever other material is presented. Just the word ‘sex’ creates curiosity and excitement. Since as early as the 19^th century, sexual imagery has been used as a marketing tool, and its prominence in today’s advertisements has risen to an unforeseen degree.

When Super Bowl commercials use taglines like “Kate Upton washes the new Mercedes CLA in slow motion,” we can be only too aware of how sexual imagery is used in advertisements. The creators of the commercial succeeded in capturing the audience’s attention whether they wanted to look at the new Mercedes or not. Sex Sells: The Power & Influence of Sexual Imagery challenged artists to explore this age-old adage and interpret the effects that it has on visual culture.

Little Blue Box- Charlotte Chene

Using sex to sell often completely unrelated products was the driving inspiration behind many of the artists’ works. Several artists comment on the absurdity of certain ad campaigns, while others delve into the media’s use of sex to market celebrities, both in the present day and historically.

Other artists critique the very art market of which they are part and the use of sex to promote art; ironically even in this very show. The artists question such ideas as the very fine line between porn and art as well as the evolution of figurative work in a sexually driven society.

When Jackson Junge Gallery solicited artists for sexual imagery, there was no way to predict what sort of submissions would be received. With such a diverse group of artists, the interpretations of Sex Sells are equally varied. Each artist tackled the prompt from their own distinct perspective, giving the show a truly unique and multifaceted evaluation of sexual imagery in our world.

Sex Sells: The Power & Influence of Sexual Imagery runs from May 8^th thru July 7^th, 2013. An opening reception with the artists is scheduled for the evening of Friday, May 10th from 6pm -9pm. Reception and exhibit are free to the public.

Last week, Wicker Park's Crystal Street saw 5 garage break-ins in 1 week.

Now it's Bucktown's turn.

In an email issued this morning via the Bucktown Community Organization, a car or van has been backing into garage doors; damaging the doors and allowing access into the garage. Over the past 3 days, 8 garages have been broken into in this manner.

Higher Values, Lower Market Time and 74 Homes Sell

April 27, 2013 - The real estate trend we reported on earlier this year continues. And sellers are going to love seeing the change. Low inventory and a steady influx of new buyers means real estate is selling in record time. Redfin has coined a new term "flash sales" which are those that sell in a very short period of time. And we have plenty of them.

The market is indeed now a seller's market. But sellers are slow to jump into the market. Distressed sales (including foreclosures and short sales) had forced values down...way down. The good news for sellers: those values are starting to rebound. And sellers who had listed last year and didn't sell are re-listing now and are selling in record time.

The market is very competitive now for buyers in the West Town neighborhoods. Bucktown, Wicker Park, Ukrainian Village and East Village are all very desirable neighborhoods filled with qualified people looking for their new home. You just can't schedule your showing fast enough for your buyers. For well-priced properties, you see sales within just a few days and you see multiple offers on those properties.

A client and I saw a penthouse this weekend in East Village. This 2 bedroom condo had received 3 offers within the past 48 hours. It's also listed for less than the owner paid in 2005. Today's market in a nutshell.

To get a true understanding on the real estate market today, we looked at the number of closed sales in the area for March 2012 vs March 2013. This number includes East Village and Ukrainian Village because those neighborhoods are being included in searches for the Wicker Park and Bucktown areas.

Because inventory has been flat, the overall number of closed sales year over year are relatively flat. According to the Midwest Real Estate Data LLC:

March 2012 - Total # of Closed Sales - 71

March 2013- Total # of Closed Sales - 74

Where you see the shift coming is in the market time and the average value of these sales. Market time now averaging 31 days. Last year market time averaged 120 days.

Single Family Homes: In March 2012 the average value of a single family home sale was $642,000. In March 2013, the average value of a single family home sale was $925,000. We're not seeing the amount of foreclosures and short sales this year forcing property values down. So the average value of the homes being sold is significantly higher than it was last year at this time.

Condominium Sales: For condos the same story is true. In March 2012, the average value of a condo sale was $345,00 due in part to foreclosures and short sales. In March 2013, the average value of a condo sale has jumped to $428,000.

New construction is also pushing values up. Positive news for current homeowners; especially those thinking of selling. Not so positive news for those buyers working hard to buy their dream home in the midst of a lot of competition and rising values.

This trend is expected to continue.

Vanquished Realities Exhibition

A new exhibition at Eyeporium Gallery in Wicker Park features the work of photographer Stan Rosenstock, 1968—Vanished Realities. Rosenstock sifted through over 3,000 images of the at turbulent time and has selected these priceless moments to reflect that transitional and often violent time in history.

This new show features never-before-seen images, capturing vast changes in the faces of ordinary and extraordinary individuals who were part of the ferment, from police officers holding truncheons to idealistic protestors, from politicians to entertainers, all seen through the lens of a young Chicago photographer, Stan Rosenstock caught up in the hopes and fears tearing apart the city and the world.

Wicker Park - Published Saturday April 19, 2013 Mystery has always surrounded the space of the long vacant Palm Terrace Banquets located at 1250 N. Milwaukee Avenue.

In the 1930's a portion of the building located at 1246 N. Milwaukee Avenue was home to a jeweler as show in this photo courtesy of WBEZ:

And the building was vacant for a number of years after Palm Terrace closed up shop almost 15 years ago. Recently, the commercial space has been filled with a new store primarily focused on Nike footwear called Stash.

Bright and early Saturday morning Wicker Park resident, Stephanie Cwik, contacted us know the front facade at 1250 N. Milwaukee Avenue was finally being removed. And this stunning turn of the century building and architectural details are what are being discovered behind that old Palm Terrace facade:

The bank owned building was bought by local businessman Tony Kim last year and plans may be in the works to rent the space as lofts.

Wow. We can't wait to see the whole building when it's finished. Another amazing discovery and historic little treasure in Wicker Park.

Wicker Park's New Chic Boutique Hotel

Wicker Park is getting a new hotel hybrid. A building that has been a "single room occupancy" or SRO building is getting a new life and a chic makeover. According to a report published yesterday via Chicago Real Estate Daily, this turn of the century building is being transformed into a corporate housing-hostel hybrid, "renting rooms to companies bringing out-of-town employees to Chicago for extended work trips and to visitors here for shorter stays".

Holiday Jones, as the property will be called, is located at 1659 W. Division Street (Paulina and Division). It will have 35 rooms, each offering about 150 square feet and costing $70 to $150 per night. Longer term stays will qualify for lower rates.

Only 5 or 6 of the 35 units, will have a private bath. Accommodations will include a shared kitchen and 24 hour staffing. This building includes a 1st floor commercial space (formerly the home of shoe store Pump). Owners are planning to include a small cafe offering coffee and pastries in that space.

Holiday Jones is looking to open later this Summer and will target younger travelers who don't want to stay in downtown Chicago.

Potato Tacos at Big Star?

When we go to Big Star, we traditionally head straight for the Taco de Pescado (beer battered tilapia tacos-pictured) or the new lighter version of the chicken tacos served with cucumber and radish; just in time for Spring. But this week we wanted to be a little more adventurous and were intrigued by the Taco de Papas con Rajas. The Taco de Papas con Rajas is simply a vegetarian taco but there's nothing simplistic about the flavor.

So what's included in this "vegetarian" taco? Well, we're happy to report there is no soy product and you won't find seitan; welcome news for the gluten-free. Instead you'll find, roasted chiles (chipotles in this version) and cubed potatoes. This little veggie number packs a powerful, spicy punch. The combination of flavor is so good, we went back the next day and tried them again. Confirmed. Powerful. Spicy. Delicious. And only $3.

Big Star Sous Chef Fundraiser - Sunday

In an all too familiar story, Big Star Sous Chef Joseph Gleeson was involved in a hit and run on Milwaukee Avenue in early April while riding his bicycle. He sustained injuries to his wrist and thumb and a fundraiser is being held this weekend at Bucktown's,The Charleston, to help him with his medical expenses.

Richard Talks: Chicago Music, Local Anesthetic and his neighborhood, Wicker Park.

For those who may not know, Richard Milne is one of 93XRT’s incredible disc jockeys and host of Local Anesthetic. Local Anesthetic is a weekly program on 93XRT that showcases local Chicago musicians every Sunday at 7:30pm.

Richard is, without question, one of the most influential people in the Chicago music scene. So we checked in to talk about Chicago music, Local Anesthetic and his neighborhood - Wicker Park.

Clearly, you’re very supportive of and passionate about music. When and how did your passion for music begin?

I’ve always loved the radio and the music I heard. My great rock and roll memories rarely involve live performances; most involve hearing music on the radio for the first time. Iggy Pop’s “Shake Appeal” on the Big Beat, driving north just outside Joliet and hearing the Rock and Roll Animal version of “Sweet Jane”. Riding in my broth. Hearing Nicker-in-law’s Toronado while “Whipping Post” played on the old WSDM Lowe’s “Switchboard Susan” while stopped at a light and jumping out to tell my buddy Squirrel (who was in the car behind me) to “Turn on XRT!” Dozens of instances like that. Radio moments and music like that just seared themselves into my brain.

I started working in college radio at SIU, got my first real commercial DJ job at the old WDEK in DeKalb and then got hired on for weekends at WXRT in 1986. My 25^th anniversary of being an XRT jock was just last year.

How did the idea for Local Anesthetic develop and how has it evolved over time?

I started hearing some out of the ordinary music in Chicago beginning in the late 80’s. Urge Overkill, Eleventh Dream Day, Material Issue, The Jesus Lizard. I’d bring bands by the station, tape interviews and live performances and then play them back on the air at 3am or so. In the spring of 1991, I approached the Program Director, Norm Winer, with the idea of creating a show devoted to Chicago musicians and artists. The first Local Anesthetic aired in April of ‘91 with my guests The Jesus Lizard and Poster Children.

Local Anesthetic is simply an extension of me always trying to turn people on to music, both new and old. In this case, specifically Chicago music.

Are there bands who were unknown before appearing on your show and became known after appearing on Local Anesthetic?

I don’t know that I’ve ever directly helped a band make any significant jump in popularity via exposure on Local Anesthetic. That’s not really the point of the show. If I can help somebody move some records or tickets to a show, that’s somewhat satisfying but Local Anesthetic is on the air to entertain listeners. “Hey, here’s a Chicago band that’s doing good work. Here’s what they sound like and here’s what they have to say for themselves”. Have I been the first DJ to recognize and play good bands that have gone on to create even better work and perhaps get somewhat popular? Certainly. Hundreds.

You’ve interviewed many musicians over the years. Who was your favorite interview and why?

I enjoyed talking with the Smashing Pumpkins in 1991 when “Gish” was released. Billy was already very serious and passionate about his work. Actor John Mahoney was a guest DJ a number of times. Always great fun.

Talking to Curtis Mayfield via telephone from his home in Atlanta was a thrill. I’ve never had the whole band in at once but all the guys in Cheap Trick have made individual and memorable appearances. Noted chronic record collector Dante Carfagna’s annual appearance for the ongoing “History of Chicago Soul and Funk” is always great. My favorite show of any given year, though? The annual Holiday Spectacular in which bands (and mostly unknown ones, at that) come up with short Holiday greetings for listeners. The “Best of 20 Years” of submissions aired this Christmas.

Who are the most promising top 3 bands in Chicago today?

Gosh, I’ve no clue. Another distinction of Local Anesthetic that needs to be made is that I’m solely interested in a band’s recorded work. If you stink in live performance, it doesn’t matter to me. (And, believe me, the number of bands that have recorded what I consider to be excellent material and then subsequently horribly disappointed me live, are legion). Conversely, I’ve no interest in bands that put on a great show but make bad records. “I know what I’m about to play isn’t very good but you should really see the band live to appreciate them”? Doesn’t work that way.

We’ve talked in the past about Wicker Park being a focal point for Chicago’s music scene. Do you still feel that way?

The Double Door is still an anchor for music in Wicker Park. Having Reckless right on Milwaukee Ave. is important. I can even include Myopic Books and Quimby’s as indirect yet vital bastions of the ‘hoods music vibe. There are a number of booking agencies, music lawyers and publicists up and down the strip, too. Tons of bands even use the UPS store on Milwaukee as their mailing address. Is Wicker Park the center point of Chicago music, though? Perhaps from a public perception but the reality is there are more rehearsal spaces, studios, agents and labels scattered around Pilsen, Humboldt and even Bridgeport than in Wicker Park these days. Cheaper rents will always be a critical factor for musicians.

How do you feel the music industry has changed over the past 20 years you’ve hosted Local Anesthetic? And specifically Chicago music?

When I first started Local Anesthetic there were two hundred bands in town. Now, it seems like 20,000. Frankly, really good bands were out of the ordinary then. Now, being at least good is de rigueur. There seems to be less commercial aspirations among young bands now. There are all sorts of bands for whom just creating music with no eye for commercial success is good enough. That’s cool from a hip standpoint but I’m sure Joe at Metro would like to see more locals strive to fill his room.

Right now I’m sitting here listening to Disappears’ sixteen minute guitar throb called “Revisiting”. Cool Chicago band on a cool Chicago label (Kranky). Cool for Chicago.

Why did you choose to live in Wicker Park and how have you seen the neighborhood change over the years?

I moved to Wicker Park in 1988 because I could afford it. Being close to the Kennedy, Eisenhower and the Blue Line could have been factors but weren’t; it was simply because my rent was cheap. It’s funny to think that now I’ve lived here longer than I’ve lived anywhere else in my life. I loved the Busy Bee, of course, and Dreamerz was an occasional hang (to name just a few of the many classic joints now long gone). I never tire of walking by the stately homes on Hoyne and Pierce and Caton. Even a couple of those beauties that we thought were lost for dead are now being restored to their original grandeur.

How’s it changed? Damen/North/Milwaukee used to be dead after midnight. Dead. Instead of the Rama Mart, I go to 7-11 for a gallon of milk. My closest bank branch was by the Park West in ’88. Now, I walk less than two blocks. I liked the Park itself better without the fence that now surrounds it. At the same time, thank you Mr. Daley for the beautiful library branch. That first $350 apartment I had in 1988 currently rents for $1200. The $850 (with heat) three bedroom I had in ’90 is now a condo. Right? Inevitable, I guess, but it’s a shame to see the ‘hood’s affordability slip away. Yet that artistic spirit and funkiness seems to hang on. Credit the Flat Iron and all the other institutions I’ve already named for keeping that alive.

Wicker Park has been my home for nearly a quarter century. It’s been a good place for my wife and me to own a home, run a business, raise a son, walk the dog and inevitably bump in to a musician or two I know along the way.

Major Renovation Planned for Wicker Park's Milwaukee Avenue

Wicker Park- January 13, 2013 Well this certainly is the best news we've heard all week. The West Town Shopping Center (home of The Bar Method, Oberweiss, Payless, Radio Shack and others) may just be getting a much-needed makeover. According to Chicago Real Estate Daily, plans are being discussed to renovate the former Wieboldt Department store building at 1272 N. Milwaukee Avenue.

According this week's report:

Centrum Partners LLC acquired the building in a $33 million dollar acquisition in December 2011. The Chicago-based developer plans to strip paint from the exterior of the former department store, repair and repaint the structure's terra cotta ornamentation and remove metal and synthetic cladding along the base of the structure.

Centrum also acquired the space currently leased to K-Mart and Jewel-Osco which includes 674 parking spaces.

Because the former Wieboldt's building is located in the historic landmark district, their plans must be approved by Chicago Landmarks. The plans were being presented on January 10, 2013.

This stretch of Milwaukee Avenue has struggled with its acquisition of commercial tenants because of its rundown appearance. The renovation is planned to change that. It is also planned to increase the rents in that location.

Large West Town Parcel on Chicago Avenue Purchased

In a story published by Chicago Real Estate Daily, it appears several parcels of vacant land at 1822-1850 W. Chicago Avenue (just West of Wood Street) in East Village have been sold; according to a deed filed with the county. Fifield Cos. paid $2.6 million dollars for the property and is planning an $18 million development that will include three four-story buildings with 48 apartments and 9,000 square feet of retail space.

“This was an effort by us to move luxury product into an emerging neighborhood,” stays CEO Steven Fifield.

Super cozy with a diner feeling, the best advice I can give is to get there early. Lines of people are usually forming down Milwaukee Avenue early on the weekends. The food is good --- and original. Pancakes are a favorite here and they range from carrot cake with vanilla bean sauce to cranberry...or even white macadamia ! The standard fare: Omelettes, eggs, french toast are also available. Always good but very busy on weekends.

For those looking for a quiet respite in the heart of the city, the Riverside Cafe is for you. The large patio is very private. The Sunday brunch is a huge spread of about 50+ items were you'll find: fruit, eggs, pierogis, pancakes, cereal, steak and so much more. The regular menu is not available but this is a great deal (and a great deal of food) for $12.95 a person.

Ashland Avenue Pegged for Revamp - Just announced this morning, Ashland Avenue has been selected for a major CTA overhaul beating out Western Avenue. Plans for the revamp will extend as far South as 95th and as far North as Irving Park. You can find additional details and preliminary plans here.

Clean & Green - There are a number of ways to participate in Earth Day this year. First the Bucktown Community Organization will be relocating plants from the Bloomingdale Trail to another location. Want to participate? Here's how you can become involved. Also this weekend, the Annual Clean & Green event facilitated by the Mayor's Office. Green Music Fest Initial Line Up Announced - Still a few months away, Green Music Fest has announced a few preliminary bands for this year's line up June 22nd-23rd.Unfortunately, there is no Dinosaur Jr. or Raveonettes headlining again year.

Green Resources Community Fair- This weekend you'll find a community fair happening in Wicker Park proper at 1425 N. Damen Avenue. The fair will focus on how you can become more "green" and offers a number of classes - like yoga - and activities. It's free and perfect for kids too.

Wicker Park Garage Break-Ins - If you live in the area and own a bicycle you may not want to keep it in your garage. Chicago International Move & Music Festival- This weekend do not miss the 5th Annual CIMM Fest which features over 150 music and movie performances throughout Logan Square and Wicker Park. It's one of the best events of the year and you can see an incredible number of interesting and unique performances and film, documentaries, etc you won't be able to see anywhere else. Dine Out for Life with Club Lucky - Every year Club Lucky participates in this terrific fundraiser to generate money which is donated to Dining Out For Life. So if you head to Club Lucky on April 25th, a portion of the proceeds is donated to this great cause.

Ripasso vs Schwa - Chef Battle & Fundraiser - For the 2nd time Chef Theo Gilbert (Ripasso) and fellow Chef Michael Carlson (Schwa) will battle to make the very best dishes using the same 3 ingredients... and one secret ingredient. It's all for a great cause and helps to raise money for Chicago Wapiti RFC, Youth Rugby Program. National Record Store Day - The 3rd Saturday in April is always National Record Store Day; a day when you have the opportunity to celebrate the independent record stores in your community and across the country. Be sure to stop by Reckless Records and Dusty Groove for food, giveaways, in-store performances, special promotions and more. Record Store Day.

Riley Announces Store Closing - Earlier this week, Bucktown's long-term retailer Riley announced they would be closing. The building was sold last year and Riley's lease was not renewed. A member of the business community for 10 years, this is a big loss for the neighborhood. In addition, the very talented Chicago designer Carl Dahlstedt has also closed up shop at 2028 W. Division Street. Apparently they have relocated to Michigan.

Last but not least, we reported earlier that Kids Rule is also closing up shop on Milwaukee Avenue. Their big sale continues.

4 Wicker Park Break-Ins in 5 Days

Wicker Park - April 19, 2013

We reported earlier this week that 3 garages on the 1700 block of West Crystal in Wicker Park had been broken into early Sunday morning close to 3am. Strangely, they targeted garages almost right in a row. Bicycles and other valuables were stolen.

Early this morning, we received information from one of the residents of that block who told us, yet another, break-in occurred and the bicycle pictured above was stolen.

If you have valuables in your garage, you may want to relocate those. Please be sure to complete police reports for any break-ins so the Chicago Police Department is aware and if you see anything suspicious, please call 911.

Each and every year the team at Club Lucky - 1824 W. Wabansia in Bucktown participates in this terrific fundraiser. And this year, the event is April 25th. Enjoy a great meal at Club Lucky that day and a generous portion of the proceeds are donated to this great cause.

What Is Dining Out for Life?

On Thursday, April 25, over 150 participating restaurants will donate 25-100 percent of their proceeds.

Dining Out For Life is an annual fundraiser involving the generous participation of volunteers, corporate sponsors and restaurants. 1991, Dining Out For Life was created by an ActionAIDS volunteer in Philadelphia. Dining Out is now produced in 60 cities throughout the United States and Canada.

More than 3,000 restaurants donate a portion of their proceeds from this one special day of dining to the licensed AIDS service agency in their city. More than $3 million dollars a year is raised to support the missions of 60 outstanding HIV/AIDS service organizations throughout North America. With the exception of the annual licensing fee of $1,150, all money raised in these cities stays locally.

Dining Out For Life International is a 501(c)4 nonprofit.

Emporium Arcade to Expand by Summer

Emporium Arcade, Wicker Park's bar-cade at 1366 N. Milwaukee Avenue just opened last June and this uber popular spot is already looking to expand. Great news because if you've ever been to Emporium Arcade, you know how packed it can get.

We saw a public notice posted about the expansion a few months ago and DNA Info published details of the plans today.

The expansion will allow Emporium Arcade to move into the adjacent space (1368 N. Milwaukee Avenue) allowing them to essentially double their space. The new space will include an additional bar, more games, a possible event space (to rent) and a movie projector screen.

Additional details will be disclosed a little later.

And we've just got to say, we love seeing our fellow small neighborhood business owners expanding like they are. Congrats.

Dates: Saturday July 13th and Sunday July 14th

Welcome Tables at Club Lucky, 1824 W Wabansia

Cost: $5 includes unlimited Free Trolley Rides

Each year over 700 attendees explore the 100 gardens of various sizes and locations in the Bucktown neighborhood - North Ave to Fullerton Ave - Western Ave to Ashland Ave. The sponsored trolley transports them around this one square mile neighborhood with designated stops at some of our gracious sponsors for refreshments.

The purpose of this event is to raise funds to be reinvested in the beautification of our neighborhood, and to bring community members together in sharing the inspiration of their personal green spaces. The Bucktown GardenWalks have funded the Gateway Green at Cortland and Western, the perennial and bulb border at Churchill Park on Damen Ave, the greenspace at Drummond Montessori School, 1845 W. Cortland, the 1000 spring bulbs and the fall mums at the Bucktown-Wicker Park Library, 1701 N. Milwaukee, and this year a new space at Cortland and Paulina.

The Bucktown TreeWalk, is unique in the city as it highlights the canopy above us, year round. It is used for several education tours during the other seasons of the year. It is included in the Guidebook and on our website, and includes over 50 species of trees. Most of the trees highlighted will be in parkways while exceptional and unusual trees in private gardens are noted.

"Art in the Garden" continues with painters from the Plein Air Painters of Chicago working in the gardens and on the streets during the event. We have invited these artists back so keep an eye out for them.

The Petting Zoo will be at Lottie's again this year.. ..

Long-time Bucktown Store Loses Lease

In a scenario that's becoming all-too-familiar these days, another independent boutique is being pushed out of the neighborhood. Riley, a 20 year Bucktown veteran at 1659 N. Damen Avenue, has lost their lease. Per an email issued by owner Stephanie Riley, rising lease costs are forcing them out and they will close at the end of May.

The building at 1659 N. Damen Avenue was sold in April 2012. Apparently the new owners are doubling the rent.

In a trend that is becoming almost a daily occurrence, small independent boutiques and businesses who have been members of this community for many years (and who have helped create a special and distinct retail district) are being forced out. Their leases are not being extended or they just can't afford the rent. With many high end retail chains now landing on Damen Avenue, you can't help but wonder: how long it will take before Bucktown becomes another Clybourn Corridor?

Wicker Park and Bucktown have a handful of Thai restaurants including: Thai Lagoon, Thai Village, Silom 12, O'cha and Penny's Noodles. But it looks like another Thai spot will be opening their doors soon right on the edge of Wicker Park and Bucktown.

Lincoln Square's Sticky Rice currently located at Western Avenue & Montrose will be opening a 2nd location at 1746 N. Western Avenue. Unlike traditional Thai eateries who focus on dishes common to Bangkok, Sticky Rice takes a different approach. They specialize in authentic Isaan food adding a little adventure to their dishes and menu with a focus on surprising ingredients and all around funky. They include, for example, fried caterpillars on their menu. They also offer a 100 item menu.

Look for Sticky Rice Chiang Mai to open this Summer in Bucktown. Target date is approximately July 4th.

Wicker Park Break-Ins

Early in the morning of April 15, 2013 there were a number of garage break ins in Wicker Park. On the block of 1700 W. Crystal Street, after 3am at least 3 garages were broken into with bicycles and other items stolen.

Police reports have been filed. If you have valuables stored in your garage, you may want to relocate them.

Damen/Elston/Fullerton Intersection Getting Revamp - At long last this dangerous and congested intersection is getting a much-needed makeover. Plans have been in the works for years to revamp traffic flow and it appears work will begin next year to improve this area and add bike lanes.

Vintage Photos You Don't Want to Miss - The incredible history of these neighborhoods is one of the things we love most. If you've missed our album on Days Gone By, you can see it on Facebook. It also looks like the 1930's facade at 1141 N. Ashland is being preserved.

Wicker Park Bucktown Beer Festival- TAP - A new festival was announced this week that will take place May 4th and will focus on beer. TAP will take place in Bucktown and will feature 20 neighborhood breweries and bars. And for $35 ($45 at the door), you can sample up to 10 different types of beer.

Restaurant Reviews - We've recently enjoyed 2 Bucktown spots and want to share our experiences. First, En Hakkore opened in January and serves Korean street food. It's fresh, good and the prices are very reasonable. We tried the pork tacos and sashimi bap. Both were delicious and we will be heading back soon.

Another new Bucktown spot: Pizza House 1647. The ambiance is welcoming, the service was great and the food was solid. In a neighborhood packed with pizza options, it's tough to be a 'destination' but this style of thin crust hit the spot and the slices are reasonable.

SHOPPING EVENTS

FREE Yoga Classes Saturday - Eb & Flow at 1843 W. North Avenue in Wicker Park is offering a free yoga class so members of the community can try something new. Interested? Just sign up. Also free this weekend, the Handmade Market. Here you'll find jewelry, clothing, accessories, greeting cards and can buy directly from the artisans who create them. It's Sunday from noon - 4pm.

Our Taste of Pizza House 1647 Bucktown

Bucktown - Pizza House 1647 has just opened at, you guessed it, 1647 W. Cortland Avenue a little block just west of Ashland that is surrounded by Riverside Cafe, Jane's and Cortland's Garage.

And a foreclosed 2-flat on that block has been given a brand new life thanks to owner Bobby Paladino. Paladino is also a partner of long-time neighborhood staple Club Lucky and has recently opened Pizza House 1647 serving thin crust pizza and root beer.

The space is sleek yet inviting with a large open kitchen and friendly service.

The pizza boasts a wheat crust with cornmeal bottom so we were looking forward to trying it out and ordered up the Sicilian topped with bell peppers, onions and mushrooms. We couldn't taste the cornmeal but the pizza was fresh and flavorful. Interestingly, there was very little sauce...and very little cheese but our slice was loaded with perfectly cooked vegetables. We know others have tried the sausage and have been big fans. The slices are cut in rectangular wedges vs the traditional triangular shaped slices you'll find at Santullo's or Gratto.

At $3.00 a slice, the pizza is a solid value. The full 12 inch pizzas tend to be a little pricier.

Pizza House 1647 is currently byob and serves up a fresh take on pizza. The offer solid food, a nice ambiance and good service. Every one of our neighborhood pizzerias creates their pie with their own unique spin and they're all good. For those looking for pizza that's a little lighter on the cheese, this could be your perfect spot.

Bucktown's Dangerous Intersection at Elston - Fullerton - Damen Finally Getting Revamp

This project has been in the works for almost 10 years but this very busy, congested and dangerous intersection is finally getting a revamp. Officials announced Wednesday that work will begin next year with the revamp being completed in 2015.

Emanuel intends to acquire nine parcels of land to re-route Elston. Instead of being a diagonal street that parallels the interstate, the avenue would take a big turn north of Fullerton. Elston also would turn at Damen and go directly south in the other direction. The plans also include an improved bike lane.

The Elston - Fullerton - Damen intersection ranks as one of the top 5 in the country for accidents.

Lottie's Pub Plays Big Role in NBC's Chicago Fire

When we arrived on the set of Chicago Fire at Cortland and Winchester in Bucktown, Lottie's Pub was "on fire". Fun to see this scene being shot over and over again. At that time, we had no idea Lottie's Pub was going to play such a predominant role in NBC's Chicago Fire this season. According to the storyline, 2 of the fire fighters buy Lottie's after the television fire and name their new pub "Molly's".

And is recent episodes, Lottie's Pub is front and center. Lottie's may be featured in as many as 9 episodes this season. TV production crews are expected to continue their filming in Bucktown throughout the year. So you may just have an opportunity to catch the crew if you haven't already. Mobsters & More - The History of Lottie's Pub

This small pub located at 1925 W. Cortland Avenue has had an interesting past and always seems to be a business of interest. In the 1930's when the bar was owned by Lottie Zagorski, it was both a grocery store and a bar. In the mid 1930's the basement is said to have served as a place of anonymity for both gangsters and public officials. Backdoor deals between city officials and mobsters were said to be a daily occurrence at this neighborhood spot. Zagorski was arrested in the 1960's for running a gambling ring and was raided by the Federal Bureau and IRS in 1973. Zagorski died of natural causes following her testimony before a grand jury. Ownership has changed hands over the past couple of decades but the current owners have owned Lottie's since 2001. For additional details about Lottie's History.
